Dually Conversion???

I am thinking about putting a dually rear end on the butt end of my 70 C10. What year truck should i look for. It's a 1/2 ton, but can i use a 3/4 ton or a 1 ton axle. I would like to get one fairly cheap, junk yard maybe or board member??? Thanks

do you have coils or leaf ?

you can mount duallies on the rear axle you have right now if its 8lug, no rear axle swap necessary, conoverbandit did thison his C20 pickup, will work on K20 also, just find four matching 16" duallies and put them on withflat dually nuts,

dually conversion

it might be a little late, but check out arrowcraft conversions http://www.arrowcraft.com/ . they have adapters for 5 lug rear ends http://www.arrowcraft.com/f_adaptors.htm. i think the maxi 235's would work, plus they allow you to use any custom rim.

Here'sa pic of one with duals on a "single wheel" rear axle.

Looks good, IMO.

When ya do it like this, with a single wheel rear, you should definetly install later (bigger, longer) wheel studs to accomodate the increased thickness of two rims. Use the flat-back (not conical) lug nuts for duallys.

Also, something to watch..........inner wheel tub-to-floor bolts.

I know on '73-up trucks, the bolts will eat the sidewall of a tire in a hurry!! I think '67-'72 trucks have shorter bolts, but still worth watching.

I like the looks of that!

So there's plenty of space to run dually rims on the front or is there a spacer up front? In the rear is there a spacer between the rims?
How much do dually rims cost, steel? aluminum?
Do they come in 8 lug 15" size, I guess they would not clear the drum for the rear?

I was thinking of getting dually rims for the rear 16" diameter and running 34x9.5/16 TSLs to match my front 33s, kinda like the cement truck look.

I'll be doing this with my 67 C20 soon, so I'm glad all I'll need is to find wheels and not a conversion kit!

You need to know what brakes you have in the rear.
On our trucks, (67-72) I think, they were all small rear drums.

If you have a '73-up, or have swapped to a '73-up rear end, you have to have the small brakes to fit dually rims.

Big brakes won't let the rim seat against the hub, (drums are larger dia. than inside of rim) True duallys remedy this by moving the drums, backing plates INBOARD to clear the rim.

One way around this is to go to 19.5 rims instead of 16's.

I've never seen any custom wheels in 19.5 X 8 lug, and the tires aren't as cheap as 16's, but they do make SS simulators for the 19.5's with 8 lug. Look at the next Snap-On P-series tool van you see. Those series trucks have 19.5's that fit the 8- lug pickup pattern.
Anybody for a slammed dually on 20's?.......er, well........19.5's??

Up front, you have to use either adapters, or swap to 1 ton spindles and hubs. Cheap on 2WD trucks, $$$ on 4X4's!

Would 12" drums be considered small? I think it is because the 14 bolts had 13+" drums.
