Re: help with starter wiring
That harness is not color coded to the GM, but the purple wire goes to the small S term on the selinoid. The black wire will go to the large term with the bat cable. The green wire goes to the R term. If you have factory type HEI you will not need the green wire.

Re: help with starter wiring
I'm not so sure about the intent for the green wire with that larger end on it. logically it should go to the resistor bypass as Wrenchbender Ret said above.

Re: help with starter wiring
Regular points distributor, yes horn relay too. It's factory stock 1958 V8 setup. I bought the whole bunch of factory style wiring harness from Classic.

Re: help with starter wiring
As I recall the green wire other end is at the white resistor on the firewall to the distributor to provide starting voltage when the starter is activated by the purple wire that is connected to the starter switch (key)
The black wire goes to the horn reley and then to the generator regulator. That is from a old memory bank that is very foggy !!!

Re: help with starter wiring
Did they send a wiring diagram or do they have one online? Most of the top wiring kit manufactures have their diagrams online.
The factory service manual for your truck should have the stock wiring diagram and it should be online somewhere. This is a diagram for a 55 pickup but it may help some. vhttp://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/electrical/wiring/pdf/55truck.pdf Last edited by mr48chev; 08-06-2012 at 01:25 AM. |

Re: help with starter wiring
Odd it is a "replacement" harness and they did not use original wiring colors. Black is usually used for ground. Google is your friend, here is a link to wiring diagrams. Save it the old car manual site has tons of information.

Re: help with starter wiring
I would suggest doing that the first thing this morning. Ask them where the wiring diagram is and why the color codes don't match the factory color codes. If you don't have a copy of the factory service manual for that truck I'd suggest making the 30.00 something investment as they should have the exact wiring diagrams you need. Along with instructions and diagrams for the rest of the truck. |

I'm calling them today. I was surprised they didn't have the wires marked. Or instructions for that matter.

Re: help with starter wiring
Just got off the phone with American autowire. What a joke, tech help was rude and didnt know what i was talking about. They ask for part numbers then cant cross ref them to cassic part numbers. I spoke to another tech earlier and he did solve the starter wire problem but couldnt help with the other problem im having. He gave me his ext. But told me he was really busy today and probably couldnt take my call?? How does he know how busy hes gonna be? The next guyi got on the phone didnt know anything, he said there is limited info. On a wire harness? thats all they sell.
I need to know where the red wire under the dash thats bunched up with the lights from the instument panel goes. I know the other red wire goes to the amp gauge with the black thats in the same part of the harness. |

Re: help with starter wiring
They don't know or forget that it's guys ( and gals ) like us that keep the hobby alive. There's lots of cars and trucks that don't have the following that these trucks have. We keep these places open for business and keep all those people employed. I run a small painting business and if I talked to people like that or showed the lack of interest that these guys showed me today I would have a lot more time to work on this truck. BTW, never got a call back from American Autowire. Nice

Re: help with starter wiring
Ok is this actually an American Autowire kit or did you just call them out of the blue expecting them to answer your questions?
Unless the kit came in an American autowire box with their parts number on it you can't really expect the tech guy to be able to answer your questions. |

Re: help with starter wiring
I bought the harness from Classic Parts but all the packages were labeled American Autowire. When I called classic for help they gave me Americans tech number. So yes, it's American Autowire kits and yes I expect them to answer my questions. And if they don't want to be bothered with customer tech questions then they should send detailed instructions or label wire ends. That would be better, I hate calling tech lines.

Re: help with starter wiring
Those wire colors match what my 57 wiring diagram shows. The 12 gauge black wire goes from the large terminal on the starter and connects to one side of the amp gauge. There should be a red 12 gauge wire from the other side of the amp gauge to the battery terminal on the ignition switch. The 14 gauge violet wire goes from the start terminal on the ignition switch to the start terminal on the starter solonoid. The 20 gauge dark green wire goes from the third terminal on the starter solonoid to the coil side of the ignition resister. I would guess that if the truck is a six cylinder model with a foot starter button the violet wire would not be necessary.

Re: help with starter wiring
Thanks, I got the started wired already. I now need to know where the red wire in the dash goes. It's grouped with all the dash lightbulb sockets. It's heavy gauge with clear connector.

Re: help with starter wiring
Ok, good enough, I have run into things were a company makes items for other vendors to their specs and said item doesn't match their normal items
Have you tried going to the website clicking on tech support and clicking on wiring kit instructions and plugging in the number from your kit? http://www.americanautowire.com/ |
