Unless you are driving like a maniac, I say no. I drove my 73 for many years without a tailgate. The bedsides do wiggle around a bit when you are driving on a bumpy road, but they are still very solid.

I think the bedsides move with a tailgate or without. There may be an extreme circumstance where not having a tailgate will hurt, but I think 99% of the time it isn't an issue.

On my '80 Chevy 4x4 that I had since 92, probably only a year it ever had a tail gate in it and box sides still as solid as when I first got it.This truck has spent lots miles on gravel roads,pastures and lease roads too...You should be fine..

Our frames are so squishy anyways. All you would notice is you lost 85lbs on the back end.
