virgin 72 swb C10 deluxe
Hi everyone! Newly registered and subscribed to the site but have been looking for a while now. Some killer builds and awesome info to be learned on here. I have been out of the 67-72 trucks for a while, sold my last 71 in 1993, (been building the squares and S trucks since then) so I’m a little out of the loop on the prices these things are going for now. I have an opportunity to buy a virgin 72 custom deluxe but would like to know what these things are worth now since I am a working guy and the $$ don’t come easy. I only have a few pics but can give a pretty decent description so hopefully you guys can work with that and give me some idea of what would be a fair price for the truck. Here’s some info.....
The good: 1972 short wide bed, custom deluxe package, 350, AT, PS, PB, radio delete, black on black, 100% original paint and patina, matching #’s for what its worth, 2 owner, 2nd owner bought at an estate sale and is presumed 142k miles, SC truck , runs and drives like it has 42k, engine starts easy and very quite, Q-jet choke works nicely, straight and absolutely rust free bed, bed floor and wheel tubs are nice and straight although no paint on them, 8 inch truck rally wheels with new 255/70/15 tires, clean and rust free frame, 50% of the side trim is restorable and straight, perfect original dash pad, really nice deluxe scroll door panels, firewall nice and rust free, floor pans rust free, cab supports are clean and rust free, no rust in the cab roof or drip rails, inner rockers are rust free, nice original grill insert, all gauges work except gas gauge, all lights and signals work, wiring harnesses all seem to be in nice condition and no hacking evident The bad: Needs both rocker panels (included in buy), needs PS cab corner, needs PS inner fender, DS inner fender has small (2" x 2") rust spot by steering box but is repairable. Needs PS fender or repair at front lower corner, DS fender is absolutely rust free but was killed at some point in life so it’ll need replacing. PS door is bad rusty in the lower jam and was slightly dented at the bottom below the wide trim however outside door skin is rust free, DS door is clean on the outside but has small fixable rust in the jam, arm rest pads disintegrated, 2 sheet metal screws through the radio delete plate and dash to hold the plate on, 2 - 3 inch x ½ inch rust holes in the both lower kick panels, both window regulators are worn out, windshield cracked, bottom of the radiator support needs repair on the PS, needs battery tray, outer grill shell beat to crap, front bumper pretty straight and usable but chrome is dull, rear sport bumper is horribly bent but brackets seem straight, gravel shields there and straight and rust free, tailgate is bent to crap and a little rusty at the bottom, engine is stone stock with all the clips and spark plug retainers, heat tube from exhaust etc, truck been sitting in a hey field for about 5 years but engine starts and idles smooth but probably could use a carb rebuild and valve seals, trans needs pulling and front seal replaced due to leak but shifts like new, needs all weather stripping, window run channels and window felts. Sorry so lengthy but trying to give an accurate description Any help you guys can lend would be great! |

Re: virgin 72 swb C10 deluxe
If the bed is straight and rust free that alone is probably worth over $1000. I would guess somewhere in the $2500 range judging by the description. Well at least on this side of the country

Pretty valuable truck, especially in original paint. I would pay $3-4k if I was looking for one. Sharpie

Re: virgin 72 swb C10 deluxe
My buddy works for the power company in another state, he called me telling me about the truck since he knew I was into the GM trucks. It sounded pretty good and he's a gear head too so the info was reliable enough to go take a looksee. The owner said that it was 4 sale for a price and it had been setting for a while. As you can see the white letter tires have faded and washed down, the pics were after we pulled it out of the hey field. the truck has one of those old grand pa 1970's seat cover...I pulled the cover up and suprizingly the seat looks nice too.
My idea, if I buy, is to get the ol gal road worthy (shouldn't take much), keep as much patina as possible, and stop the progression of the rust areas. Install the rockers and patch panels in the doors and fender so I keep as much of the original paint and just spot in the patch areas and try to match it up. Will need a DS fender for sure, or a magician for a body man to fix the original? Try to locate an original tailgate and rear sport bumper. Once all that's done, do a ECE 4/6 drop, 3/4 ton sway bar, 20x8 and 20x10 grey centered torq thrust, dump the single exhaust and whisper muffler.....smile and drive! |

Re: virgin 72 swb C10 deluxe
I'd say as much as $4,500 for that truck as it sits.

Re: virgin 72 swb C10 deluxe
Let us know how you do. Sometimes a truck can be bought fair and sometimes..... "The owner said that it was 4 sale for a price".... means 15k because they have "been watching them trucks sell at auction" Good luck with this one. If you do get it I have a really mint drivers fender for you. Sharpie

Re: virgin 72 swb C10 deluxe
Thanks for the comments guys, I have decided to drop the hammer and buy it, the guys price is right around 3k, hopefully there is some negotiation room in him? We'll see?
Sharpie, I will likely be interested in your DS fender, I know the repo's don't fit like originals from what I've been seeing on this site. |

Re: virgin 72 swb C10 deluxe
I'm going to break from the pack a bit...you don't find these in close to original condition much anymore. I paid $4800 for mine in 1994 and it was in similar condition. That was high then but I wanted it and after a year of looking I didn't blink.
I would buy the truck you posted for up to $6500. If you want it, and it suits your desire the extra money won't be a regret later. The regret would be if you didn't buy it and searched high and low to save a few $...coming up empty or having to compromise. Maybe I'm getting older or learned too many lessons the hard way but good things deserve good money. That goes for employees, service, goods, etc. Don't get me wrong, I always look for the best deal. You have a great platform to work from here. Believe me the little original parts will nickel and dime you to death, being "all there" is worth $1500 in parts like engine brackets, air cleaners, steering wheel, etc.

Re: virgin 72 swb C10 deluxe
Good luck on the buy! I'm bought similar trucks and personally I wouldn't pay more than $3gs for that truck, but location does dictate how much something is worth. I think $2-3gs is a reasonable amount if it's a running/driving truck.

Re: virgin 72 swb C10 deluxe
Well, just got back home, ended up buying the truck, drove the ol gal home, appx 70 miles, one way at 55-65 mph....performed like a champ after the cob webs got blown out. Ended up buying it for $2200 and I'm pretty pleased...especially after getting acquainted with it on the drive home. I got home and ripped all the old rubber mat out of the floor and found a little more rust in the PS kick panel than I thought was there but, but all in all, not a bad fix.
I really want to thank the members who chimed in on this thread and provided me with the confidence to make the deal happen. So now to the parts catalog, swap meets and the parts section of this site to find the needed parts. Particularly will be looking for nice used grill shell, tailgate, DS fender, rear chrome sport bumper....hopefully close to home. |

congrats on the buy! If the lwb you were asking about is also a black truck I'd be tempted to buy it and swap cabs...

VA72C10: man if it was black I would probably pay a grand more for it....swap out my cab in a couple days, and ride the wheels off it.....unfortunately they never are the right color....its light green/turquoise.

The front will work,... but the rear won't since his truck has the narrower 67-69 rearend housing. You would need a 20x10 with 5.5" BS for your wider 71-72 5-lug housing. Congrats on getting a super deal on the truck!

Re: virgin 72 swb C10 deluxe
thanks lolife, after checking out the sit for a few weeks I found out that the 67-70's had a different track width.... fortunately I hadn't ordered any wheels up to this point. I now have a thread started gettin the board members to post up pics of fleetsides with 20's on them, along with lowering specs and backspacing and tire sizes ... should be pretty helpful. Still, I think I'll wait until I get it lowered and measure to make sure the fitment is spot on.
