Need help with driveshaft - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Guys, I need some assistance with selecting, purchasing and installing a new driveshaft. I have an 85 long bed and need to replace the driveshaft.

Where can I get the best deal online for a new driveshaft? Do I need to measure the driveshaft or are if I place an order for an 85 long bed shaft will it fit fine?

Are there any existing DIY's for driveshaft replacement?

Just my .02, but do you have a local salvage yard close by?

That would be my first stop.

Did your existing shaft break or bend?

Check the yellow pages in your phone because we have a local place that will make a brand new shaft for around $100, I had them make both front and rear for a F250 a few years ago.

It is just called "Drive-line Shop", in Rocky Mount VA, but they required the truck to be there so they know all the angles are correct and there are no vibrations. At one time they did stock a few shafts for common vehicles but they generally custom make everything as needed. I would suspect shipping to be rather costly on a drive shaft and the deal would not be nearly as sweet.

I had new shafts made for a 84 F250 after I swapped in a fresh C6 that had a longer tail shaft housing. The front shaft was something like $125 with new u-joints and they made me a new front half of the rear shaft with a new u-joint and carrier bearing for $100.

Do a search on how to measure for a new drive shaft and like said before look in the phone book. I just did this, it's nice to be able to talk to someone face to face just to make sure it gets done correct. Not sure about getting it done for $100 that is very cheep. Mine cost me $450 but it is set up for alot of TQ in my Big Block Chevelle.
