Door skin removal
One of the replacement doors I recently bought has a crease dent in its lower 1/3. I was looking at it trying to figure out how to get a dolly on it. Then, I remembered that I bought a tool years ago that I have never used for lifting the flaps on door skins so that it may be removed. Anyone ever do this in order to do some body work on a door panel?

Re: Door skin removal
James, did you do it as I am planning to do in order to pound out a crease or dent? Any tips on problems encountered? I was thinking that it would be a good way to rust proof all of the inside parts and put in some sound deadner insulation when it goes back together. Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Re: Door skin removal
Burb, i had the ever present crease wher the check strap failed and creased the door. i thought it would be easier to clean out ant bits of rust and such in the bottom of the door as well. the job is pretty straight forward just take your time , and dont try to take the skin off from around the window opening. use a cut off disc to separate the skin from window frame at bottom of said opening right where skin meets window opening . if done right should be 2 small cuts easy to repair.

Re: Door skin removal
Thanks, again. That is the type of tip or warning I was looking for. I will have to study the door some more to envision just where you are telling me to cut. So, don't be surprised if there are more questions later. I may try my hand at posting a tech piece about this when I finally get to it.

Re: Door skin removal
ky, more than likely you will beat me to the punch. I have another 2 projects that I have to get running before I devote the attention to my 'burb.
I will try and remember though to post something about the door skin removal tool I bought long ago but have yet to use. Can't even remember where I got it from. |

Re: Door skin removal
Well, a quick search did reveal this tutorial, http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php?topic=4189.0.
But wait! Check this out! Anyone have any experience with this? The tool I have is for prying up a little section at a time, but this pneumatic tool looks cool. |

Re: Door skin removal
I have a different version of that pneumatic installation tool. It worked fairly well. Kind of had to beat the flange around to get it started. I was wondering if by "replacement door" you meant an aftermarket or an original that you found?

Re: Door skin removal
rbar, I found a couple of doors on my local craigslist. They're solid except for some extra holes drilled for big side mirrors and the crease dent. So, I will de-skin the one, work on the crease and weld up the holes then re-install. If it goes easily enough, I may do the same to the other in order to clean everything well, spray on some self-etching primer and stick on some dynamat type of insulation.
I ordered one of those tools, Nu-relics power windows and all new window and vent tracks and seals. I am investing quite a bit on these doors, but it should be a nice upgrade for the old 'burb. |

Re: Door skin removal
I did mine also. I removed the door skin and lower part of the door. You can check it out at http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=507513 It wasn't that hard just measure and measure again until it looked and fit right.

Re: Door skin removal
Great documentation on your build. That answers a lot of questions for me. Thanks.
Did you determine the cut line on the door skin based on the replacement skin? I think that James must have cut higher to remove the skin and work on it then replace. He refers to two small cuts to weld up. Removing my skin, fixing it then putting it back on is what I am thinking also. |

Re: Door skin removal
I made the cut shorter than the skin. I then cut some relief on each side and tucked it under the cut and welded the seam. It gave me a base to weld on and I used filler to blend it in. I talked to an old body man that gave me that Idea.

Re: Door skin removal
I replaced the rockers on my '36 pickup without welding. I used flush mounted rivets to hold the panels in place with the new style 2 part epoxy they now use to attach panels. No distortion and no burn off of paint for rust prevention. That stuff works great! I may try to do that again at the seams when I do the 'burb's doors.
