Need timing chain set for GMC 351e V6
Help! I need to purchase a timing chain set for my '66 GMC 351e V6.
For some reason I cannot sign into the GMC group to ask this question. My membership is still being (re) reviewed by the moderator of that group. Otherwise I would have posted this question there. Can anyone tell me where to find a timing chain set for my motor? I believe that it is not the same as the 67+ set for the 351 V6. I cannot find a distributor that has one. Any assistance would be appreciated. |

Re: Need timing chain set for GMC 351e V6
Purzell:
The timing chains for GMC V6's come in three varieties that I am familiar with. First they used gear sets in some of the larger displacement such as the 478's. Second, they used a set that looks like two rows of bicycle chain. You can find these on Ebay now: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trks...mc+v6&_sacat=0 This is likely the set that you have in your '66 351E. Finally, they used a chain that turns gears rather than sprockets like the one I mentioned above. I believe these were used on the earlier motors from 1960- 1963 and are called "silent type chains". If you are planning to replace the full set with sprockets/gears, then either of the above will interchange with your motor. If you want to replace only the chain and not the sprockets/gears, then you need to pull it apart to see what you have. Rockauto.com shows both of the type of chains and the sprockets/gears are available from Cloyes I hope this is helpful. regards, Steve New Orleans |

Re: Need timing chain set for GMC 351e V6
Thank you Steve. I am planning on doing the whole deal, chain and gears.
So my understanding from your message is that the parts for the 305 V6 will work for my motor? I did search Rockauto.com initially but did not find anything under the 351 V6. I do see everything under the 305 motor. I would then purchase: chain, crank sprocket, gaskets and seals...all the same for 305 v6? |

Yes, the chain sets for 305 and 351 V6's are interchangeable. Regards, Steve New Orleans |
