1972 blazer 4 wheel drive update

I am looking for advice on transmission and transfer case to put in 1972 blazer with 2003 5.3 engine. Looking for best match up and ease of installing in the blazer.

Re: 1972 blazer 4 wheel drive update

You have several options.
1. Get a 4wd 4l60e (or 4l80e) to from a newer truck to match your 5.3 and be controlled by the same computer, sell the drivers side drop 241,243,246,261 or 263 transfer case if it was attached when you bought it, find the elusive passenger side drop NP241 transfer case that will bolt right on. I believe it was only used on certain 88-91 Suburbans and K5s, maybe crew cab trucks too but I'm not sure on those.
2. Bolt up a 700r4 and 208 combo that was common in 80s models, you will have to do something about the TV cable though
3. If you don't need O/D find any th350, th400, 205/208/203 combo
4. Pay big $$ for an advance adapters kit
5. This is just thinking out loud, I'm not completely sure on the feasibility/axle width/clearance, etc. but find a drivers side drop D44 from say, an older Ford truck, swap your 6 lug outers on, move the spring perches, and bolt in a 4l60e and drivers side drop or 4l80e and drivers side drop transfer case from a late model GM. Probably more trouble than it's worth, but might work out if you find a 4l60e/241-243 combo and have access to a Ford axle. Would be pretty unique, and would leave some guys scratching their heads when they notice the diff on the wrong side.

Re: 1972 blazer 4 wheel drive update

I run an 04 6.0 in mine. I had the 4L80 but after trial fitting things and measuring, I would have had to move both the engine forward and the transfer case backwards. Moving the transfer case definately was not an option for me.

I ended up with a 4L60E (shorter than the 80) with advance adapters output shaft and adapter for the original 205 case. I only had to move the engine forward 1.5" (that's a piece of cake) and it dropped right in. 04 truck computer runs both engine and trans. Turned out to be the simplest way to get an auto overdrive in there without hacking anything.
