That is a breather, you need it or the oil will run out of the engine. You need an older type of manifold.

It's part of the old style road draft tube. That's the baffle part. If you follow it it comes out beside your distributor. Original motors had a road draft tube attached to the hole beside the distributor. The tube ran down behind the motor. It was the original way to get the fumes out of your motor until the modern pcv system came along.
If you're gonna use a pcv on your valve cover then remove the canister and plug the hole beside the distributor. There's a threaded bolt hole inside that makes it easy to build a cap and seal it. |

Re: help!! chevy 283 what the heck is this and can i remove it?
I removed mine during the rebuild and the machine shop installed a freeze plug. My intake has the oil fill tube and vented cap and the valve covers I'm using have vent and PCV valve ports.
I suppose you could also place a grommet and PCV valve in the hole and run that to your carb if you wanted. I just opted for the freeze plug since my other components provided sufficient crankcase venting.

so could i block it off with the freeze plate and get a set of valve covers with 2 holes on 1 side and 1 hole on the other and use 2 as breathers and 1 as an oil fill? or am i oversimplifying it? thanks again all - jason |

One hole per side, Pcv valve on one cover, breather/oil fill on the other.

edelbrock also has performer eps 2703 intake,it has front oil fill tube and it can accomodate the pcv canister, then hose to pcv in back of carb.then you can run nostalgic valve covers without holes.just a thought
