Steering Gearbox Frame support upgrade needed.

where the steering gear mounts to the frame on my '82 2WD seems like it started to crack at some point in time, and some genius decided to repair it with some good ol' JB weld. LMC offers a Frame Support Kit (34-1590) but it says it is for a 4WD. is there any difference in the 2wd gear box mounting vs the 4x4?

Re: Steering Gearbox Frame support upgrade needed.

I would email or call ORD and ask,I think it might because some over the knuckle kits use a 2wd steering box not sure if that bolts in or not.

Re: Steering Gearbox Frame support upgrade needed.

I have a 4wd frame that has a 2wd box on it (72) I think they are the same as my 4wd looks the same. I am going to cut the piece that mounts the box out of my bent 4wd frame and reinforce the 2wd with it. I think the 4wd cracks more often so they advertise more for them. Nowadays we are putting larger rims on our 2wd's creating more stress on the mounting of the box (weak link). This has been happening with 4wd's for a long time.

Re: Steering Gearbox Frame support upgrade needed.

The frame cracked under the box on my '77 Suburban. The kit for the 4WD will NOT fit, I have one in a box at home to prove it... I just welded the crack closed on mine, it wasn't that bad.

There are 2WD repair plates out there, but you'll have to hunt them down. They're a little more expensive than the 4WD version.
