Lock-Right in a 12 Bolt
Can anyone share their experience with a lock-right in their 12 bolt? I'm considering one for my rig with 35s and hopefully I can do hills and rocks a little better.
Spare me the swap in a 14 bolt bull. |

Before we completely ignore 14 bolts, do you not want one because it would possibly require all new wheels or you don't want to buy one?
Normally i never agree with redcap on anything but in this case i will only because it is more than a street truck it seems and rocks and lockers will break stuff majority of the time

I wouldn't use a Loc-Right for rocks. You'd be ok with everything else. Rocks require ultimate strength and can break even the toughest axle,locker,whatever. It's total resistance and every part in the drivetrain is put to the test. Unless you build it beefy from front to back,the weakest link will break.

My buddy had a 14boltff in a land cruiser with a 44 up front, 350FI sm4spd.Thing went through the Rubicon with EASE! Inspired me to get the same but 60front. Can you say indestructible??? Mine also went thru the Rubicon..not as easy as his cruiser but not a big problem.

You are wanting to use a weak locker in a weak axle with 35s and then go play on rocks? I'm not surprised that no one answered the question. Most people have better sense.

Jeez, almost afraid to post, I can feel the heat from here...
While my son's daily driver is not a 4x4, he is running a loc-rite in a 12 bolt 3.73 in a 78 swb. Tires are 295/50-15 and other than the clicking in tight turns and scrubbing the inside tire during those turns he has had no issues. With the motor (a mild 350), he has put down rubber on more than a few occasions and is not gentle at all.. Not sure how that relates directly to off road and rocks, as I could see some greater shock effect to the axle/loc-rite as you drive on-off and over them, but here is my experience..

From my personal experience with a lock right, I wouldn't try it. Maybe it was because I used it on the street and that wore it out, but it quit working when it rounded all the teeth off of the mating gears. This was a long time ago, like 1999. Maybe there better now. I sent it back, and the second one did the same thing. I was running 35's on my truck back then.
I hated it on the street also. I would be driving 60 on a curvy road and as you would get into the corner, it would unlock causing the truck to dart INTO the curve. Really sucked to drive. I am all about being different and doing stuff when people say it can't be done, but your wasting your time and money. I would weld the spider gears before I would run one of those. That being said, it sounds like you are basically waiting for someone to tell you that it will work flawlessly and provide years of trouble free service just to make you feel better about it. Spend your $$ try it and tell us how it worked. Lynn |

I have ran a lock-rite in my blazer since the late 90's. I used to run in the rocks with 36" swampers. I never had any issues in the rocks. I tried to climb a steep hill once, in 2 lo, and wiped out the teeth on a side gear. Lock-rite replaced it, and the second on has been in use ever since. If I had to do it over again, I would have bought a Detroit locker instead.

I ran Lock-Rights front and back (D44/9.25) in a 70s Power Wagon with a 4speed and a 383 a few years ago. They both were warrantied in under 3 months due to rounding the teeth off. Second set, the rear survived longer than the front. A Detroit has better road manners. This is in a NP435/NP205 truck on 33x10.5 Swampers.
My experience with the Lock-Right is not isolated, I know a couple other people that made the same mistake. The Lock-Right seems to hold up fine on the street, for what that is worth. But offroad in a heavy truck? They suck. Last edited by Redcap; 09-25-2012 at 05:55 PM. |
