Weird Hingy-thingy after left exhaust manifold
Took my front clip off this weekend to replace radiator core support bushings and while tinkering & cleaning I saw this thing. It seems like it is weighted and I can hear movement inside....

It's a heat riser that is closed when the engine is cold to route some exhaust through the intake under the carb to reduce the chance of carburetor icing in cold temps. It opens (or should) as the engine warms.

Ok, it seems a little loose or not any sort of tension on it. Hey thanks for the quick answer!

Yup. Important in colder regions.
There should be a spring that looks kind of like a choke spring that tensions the thing (right behind the counterweight). New ones run about $50 and up I think. They can rattle like the dickens too! |

Re: Weird Hingy-thingy after left exhaust manifold
I just put a new exhaust on mine and found the PO had cut the valve out of it, it gets well below freezing where I live and I've never had any problems with it not working. The one in my 69 was stuck closed, for how long I don't know but once I propped it open my truck sure ran better!
