P/S conversion ??. No bracket option.....

I have been looking at the P/S conversion options for my 62. I have seen the brackets to buy but being cheap at heart and having just brought home a front clip from a mid-70s truck I got to thinking. I have th p/s gear box attached to it original frame rail. This part of the frame has basically been stamped/pushed inward to account for the larger gearbox. I am going to cut out that part of the frame and using it as a guide for drilling the holes I am going to use some scrap steel and shim the backside of the cut off and trimmed frame section to create a flat mounting pad. Does anyone see any major flaws in my thinking?

I think you are over thinking the project. One can make anything as complicated as one wishes. I did my '64 without a bracket. From start to finish was approx 2hrs. Of course, everyone on here will chime in as to the perils of not using brackets. Perils I have not incountered after 12 years of use.

The topic has been covered many times on the board. Do a search and you can read all about it. I could tell you the short story of what I did, but I don't know if the 62 and 64 steering box attaches the same way.

My suggestion, Don't make it more difficult than it is.

Re: P/S conversion ??. No bracket option.....

62 frame is nothing like the 64 , it is not an open channel. Its a bit tougher but can be done. I bought plates and ended up modding them some.. Gear box came off a 82 chevy heavy 1/2 ( not sure it matters on the steering stuff but thats where it came from) .
Inside that frame there is a waffle piece of steel... if you hit it when drilling its a PIA. Its there to stop the frame from being crushed I would guess.. I bought very little for mine as well all the parts came from the pick a part here in town.. Post some pics or start a build thread!!.

Woodscavenger 60-62 frames are different. Why dont you just buy the mounting plates from CPP, Ebay, or Captfab (member) and mount your gearbox..

I have done the conversion on my 62. If you plan to buy the bracket check cpp, they make one specifically for 60-62 (different). I bought mine from classic parts and had to modify it. If you have the whole front end that you can swap out that wouldn't be a bad idea either especially if you want to add disk brakes (torsion bars). And correct me if I'm wrong but the last time I checked captain doesn't make brackets for that year

Re: P/S conversion ??. No bracket option.....

I bought the whole front to do a disc swap but now after reading a few things here and there and rethinking I am going to start with the p/s addition and likely do a 6 lug kit swap on front so I don't have to deal with the whole 5 lug/6 lug dilema....although I also picked up the rear axle off of the same truck just in case.

I will have to look at the drilling location. I will post picks.
