Wheel Studs

On my 64, I mounted a set of 1995 Z71 wheels to get it rolling (not driving) while it was being worked on. The studs were pretty short and the lugs grabbed 3-4 threads at best. Is this going to be a problem with any late model wheel? I have already purchased new wheels and waiting on tires but have not checked yet.

I know all the specs for my studs, just wondering if this has been discussed or found to be an issue before.

Thanks

Re: Wheel Studs

I personally wouldn't trust just 3 or 4 threads. Longer studs are easily available.

Re: Wheel Studs

I am definitely changing them if it is a problem with the new wheels.

I am just asking if this is common or if is just specific to the current wheel/stud combo.

Re: Wheel Studs

Yes, it was common on drum brake vehicles. Almost all OEM wheels are steel so they had a thinner mounting surface than aluminum. Many of the aluminum wheels of the time take the "mag" shank style lug nuts so they grab most of the threads. They didn't use the acorn style lug nuts.

Re: Wheel Studs

I'm not familar with the wheels in question, but did you check the hub bore to be sure that the wheels have enough clearance around the center hubs on your truck?

I agree that longer studs are available, as well as larger diameter studs.

I am pretty sure you need studs that are a different diameter and length. Check at the local parts store, see what studs the 95z71 had and compare them to the ones on your truck. Kieth
