Re: 69 chevy truck brake question
Are your brake shoes on correct ? The small shoe is the primary it goes to the front. This helped me a lot. http://www.pbase.com/nufsed/drumbrake

Re: 69 chevy truck brake question
You should flush your entire brake system since you had a clogged line. Check to make sure your E-brake isn't causing any drag. Make sure your adjusters are set right. And make sure all the components are still good. Wheel cylinders could be sticking. Is it one side or both?

Re: 69 chevy truck brake question
I had the same problem, new hose, new rear brake cylinders, new master cylinder, flushed hoses but now have brakes. It feels good to stop.

Same thing you describe happens when the emergency brake is on. Sounds like you still have fluid stuck in the rear hard lines or the emergency brake system is stuck. Rusty cables out back and up front can cause the emergency brakes to stick too so you need to check all the cables as well and not just the parts under the brake drums. If the rubber hose was clogged then there are probably more areas with buildup in them and the whole system needs flushed out. I fought that on a car I bought and ended up replacing all the hard lines, flex hoses and hydraulic parts in the system to get rid of the contamination.

Re: 69 chevy truck brake question
If you have the original rubber lines, they can deteriorate and restrict the return flow of brake fluid....It's just as easy to replace them, as it is to take them off and blow them out.

Re: 69 chevy truck brake question
Have you removed the drums to see if everything is functioning as it should? Slack adjusters free and etc? That is where I would start. WES

Re: 69 chevy truck brake question
I took a hammer and tapped around the center of it to get mine broke loose. They can be a PITA. You can always use a 3 jaw puller, makes life much easier if they don't pull right off.

Are your brakes new or old? If they are old the drum may be worn and it may be necessary to adjust the shoes inward enough to clear the ridge on the outside edge of the wear surface. It which case your drums should be resurfaced, or possibly replaced if worn passed maximum diameter.

Re: 69 chevy truck brake question
That you have not removed the drums changes things a bit. Chances are the return springs have, well, lost their spring. You can get new spring kits at NAPA or other parts stores. Heck, you might find other things to replace once you get inside there...

Re: 69 chevy truck brake question
Sounds like to me that you have brake or brake hardware issues. If there are not any clips on the studs holding the drums on, and you have sprayed the studs and around the end of the axle with penitrating oil and your drums still don's slip off, your shores or whats left of them has eaten wrtight into the drums. The only way to remove the drum is by backing the slack adjusters with a screw driver or brake tool. Then remove the drums and replace the brakes, wheel cylenders and I also would by a brake kit witch will have all new hardware. You can buy new slack adjusters if yours are bad also, or sometimes you can spray them with penitrating oil to loosen them up. and work them free. WES

Re: 69 chevy truck brake question
Glad you found the problem, but an inspection of the rear brakes is still a good idea.
