63 build advice please
So I have my new to me 63 sitting in storage. I'm debating about where to start with it. I've been reading/obsessing this site for a while.
To make an inexpensive driver, I'm leaning toward a static drop of 2-4 inches. I also want 5 lugs and disc brakes. I may go with a SBC Chevy over the 6 and someday install a 5.3. I may grab a 75 C10 to be my "organ" donor. It is in great running and driving condition (350 SBC) and is nearly rust free. After I get what I need I can sell all the body parts. Your thoughts? Is the 75 a good move? |

id say that the 75 is a good move, in a few cases.. one the frame.. if i remember right Suspension is better in the ways that its easer to upgrade and cost efficient.. good luck bud

Any '73-'87 C10 will work well for a donor.

You do not want to use the '75 frame under your '63. To upgrade the front suspension, you can either swap the complete front crossmember, or just the control arms, out. If you swap the control arms, it is a good idea to upgrade to the larger lower control arm shaft U-bolts. Here is one of a few helpful threads in the '60-'66 FAQ Index found on the '60-'66 main page.

I swapped a 75 front crossmember into my 1960. I bought it from a junkyard and had them slice off the frame just ahead of the firewall and took everything attached except the sheet metal. It was very handy have the donor parts because I also used all the later steering linkage and connection points for the brake lines, etc. Templates made off the 75 frame gave me correct positioning for all the attachments on my original 1960 frame.

I bought the running/driving/straight/rust-free 75 for $800. I plan to move east, so I should do well selling the sheet metal (in western NY). Even the interior in this truck is in great condition. I may keep the seat. It also has a custom steering wheel. Best part is this truck will make the drive and therefore will help with the move. I will be using the power steering and brakes, so I'll be buying brackets, too. Karl |
