I've bought a new one...

I saw this rig posted here a few days ago and fell in love. Contacted the owner and we've worked out a deal. I bought her a couple hours ago. I probably won't take possession until April. I'm going to tow her here, about 1,100 miles and I don't want to fight the winter weather. Being a Calif. boy I don't do snow or shudder ICE.

She is a 1966 C30 with factory PS and PBs. Has a 283 with a 4 speed and a/c. The now PO will be doing some work on her that was already planned and will be changing out the current tires and rims.

As required by official board policy here are her pictures.

It is, Tony still has it physically. It will be Spring before I go get it. Unless I can find a really good deal to get it shipped.

I don't know.

I'm contemplating a bbc swap, probably a 454 and new tranny. My thought is to pull my 63 Burb with this sometimes. I think that would be quite the pair.

ETA after looking closer at 1 of the motor pics I think it is a high torgue 283.

Re: I've bought a new one...

I'm glad to hear you made the purchase Mike. That definitely looks to be in very nice shape. I haven't seen a C30 camper quite like that before.

Re: I've bought a new one...

Thanks Cap't. I fell in love instantly, I've never seen anything like it. The interior of the camper looks to be in good shape too. Fortunately I'm much better working with wood than I am with metal. I'm good with electrical and plumbing too. So any repairs there I'm good for.

I've got Tony Smith working up prices for a 454 and L6 or L8 tranny swap and a Dana 60 rearend. No decisions on a swap yet though.

Re: I've bought a new one...

Do you mean a 4L60E or a 4L80E tranny swap? If so, I would go with the 4L80E hands down. The 4L60E will not hold up to that much weight.

I would probably go with a Dana 70 rear, as that is what came in a lot of 1 tons, GM, Ford and Dodge.

Rene, I don't know if I could afford the gas for 6k plus miles in that. 8mpg? If I'm lucky... But then I could camp out in your backyard...

Re: I've bought a new one...

I might consider driving out there in my Avalon with a buddy and a big tool bag and driving it home. Tony is going to put some newer Michelin tires on it and some 1 piece wheels. Currently the front has split rims.

Anything remaining that has not been said? Well, I will say that I am impressed. Loved that pb-booster--'all' bolted up with a nice reinforcement brace on driv. side! That truck has had special attention, probably beginning at the start of the assembly line. And that fade-away green stripe on the camper. Noticed that the colors even coordinate with trim on the house!

I especially enjoyed that one view from inside the camper that showed a nice assembly of '60's trucks all neatly lined up for you to select your next purchase from....enjoy your new toy, Mike. I'm sure you will show us impeccable results from lots of decisions.
