New member tons of probably dumb question

New to the site, I've been reading and looking for info for the past couple of days. I probably haven't dug enough but my biggest question is what frames can I bolt my 66 cab onto. My goal is to have something new enough to have 5on5 and disc brakes and be a short bed frame. I have the truck my dad drove when I was young. It's a 66 big window factory air SBC with a regular bed.

It's my understanding that is that it's bolted on to a 67 gmc frame currently. My only clue it there is mid engine mount not the front style my 57 has. And when my uncle bought it there was some funny stuff with the title, ie like its titled as a 67 GMC.(you old guys did crazy stuff in the 70's) It has trailing arms?? It's has power steering?? I have not pulled the cab yet to check the frame vin yet. Probably wont pull the cab until I swap the frames. I bought a short bed from a guy and its not a 66 bed because no back up lights, and it has trailing arms. Why I'm so confused is some guy told me that only 63 had trailing arms and 67 and newer, but that doesn't seam right??

1. What frames can I bolt to that will have disc brakes.
2. What frame do I have.
3. Please correct any of my misinformation, I'm new to these trucks.

Re: New member tons of probably dumb question

it looks like the right frame to me. You can look on the left side of the frame by the motor mount perch and there should be a vin # on that frame rail. it might be titled as an early 67 but is a 66. You can just bolt on later control arms or even the whole front crossmember for disc up front.

Re: New member tons of probably dumb question

Like Chevy Fleetside said, look behind the steering gear box on the frame and there is a partial VIN# in that location. 5x5 is easy and you have a ton of options, dig around a little and see what you want to spend. You can go from mild to wild. 73-87 fron crossmembers bolt right up and they have disc brakes with the 5x5 bolt pattern. Many aftermarket parts as you'll see in the vendors market place. Come up with a budget first and see what you want to do!

Re: New member tons of probably dumb question

1. So it should have power steering?
2. I though the frame vin was under the cab, thanks.
3. I would understand the year thing completely but is says GMC, it's Chevy?

Re: New member tons of probably dumb question

The back part of the frame looks like what I cut off of mine. I swapped in a '79 cross member and only had to drill one hole on each side. 3"Belltech drop spindles bolted right up.
You have a good start.

Re: New member tons of probably dumb question

Welcome to the forum

There is absolutely no reason to change the entire frame just to get the upgrades you are wanting. Many, many guys have just upgraded with the frame they have. That is one of the great things about GM trucks. There are parts that interchange over many years. The frame you have is typical of the '63-'72 Chevy trucks, and is very easy to work with and upgrade. The most noticeable difference with the GMC frames is the rear leaf springs. I have no idea why your truck is titled as a '67 GMC, but I have heard of a newer year on the title when a truck was sold after the new model year was already on the lot. I don't know about the GMC part. Does the cab have the GMC dash or the Chevy dash? It appears to have the Chevy dash.

Here is a link to the '60-'66 FAQ index found at the top of the main '60-'66 forum page.

http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=450021

there are many, many links to helpful threads in there.

Re: New member tons of probably dumb question

Thanks found the frame vin, it matches the truck. I found all the stuff about swapping k members, can someone link an article about shortening the frame for a short bed.

For my knowledge when did power steering start becoming a factory option?

Re: New member tons of probably dumb question

1955 second series was 1st year for option power steering or power brakes. FActory AC was 1958. This is for trucks and not car models.

Welcome aboard, read the FAQs and search the threads available... This board has a wealth of info available, I can't begin to list how much I have learned, even after 30 plus years of wrenching on vehicles

Re: New member tons of probably dumb question

why not show us the ser # so that we can what it really is. it seems to have had a sbc in it and all of the eng mounting appears to be chev
some places registered them as the model year that was currently in vogue. If yours was originally old stock and sold with the next years inventory, that may explain the 67 designation
if you found ser# on the frame then it more than likely is a chev as I do mnot recollect GMC having the nbrs on the frame unless they were part nbrs and those are usually found on the side rails

it is a chev 1/2t long bed. your vin plate says chevrolet.. does it say gmc on your registration with the corresponding ser #. it could have been an oversite at time of registration as someone wrote down GMC instead of chevrolet,(not impossible )

Re: New member tons of probably dumb question

A GMC wouldn't have the VIN # on the frame. If it has factory coil springs in the back, its a Chevy frame. Looks like your VIN badge says Chevy too. Very odd that it would be titled as a GMC. Its amazing what these trucks go through over nearly a half century of existance. You sort of never know what you have until you tear the whole thing apart...
