Thanks! Your info helped me, too. I've had one of those laying around for a while and wasn't sure what is was for sure(make/model) Mine came out of a
'66 from behind a 250 6 cyl. and that was al I knew.

Thanks again- and if anyone wants it, let me know.

Re: which 3 speed standard

The muncie is a decent trans, commonly called the peanut trans due to its small size.. The saginaw is also and is really desired by the dirt track guys in our area. They lighten the trans by removing a gear. Im just more partial to the muncie. Parts are readily available for both. The muncie is a little bit lighter if you have to remove it. If your going to use it on the coloum, you wont have to make any mods (bearing that the PO made any) to use it. The muncie was the standard 3 speed the factory used. It was also available in an OD ( which is much rarer, but they do pop up). The factory 4 would be the sm420 4 speed and the Powerglide was the auto.

Re: which 3 speed standard

Here is a better pic from the site that shows what a nice cleaned up muncie 3 looks like (1st pic. The 2nd pic is the saginaw and the 3rd is a borg warner t-16 HD3sp...which was only used in 68 in trucks and some mid-late 60's chevy muscle cars w/BB engines.

Re: which 3 speed standard

Another question, for the asking-- is the Muncie(or any of them) full synchronized? My limited knowledge would lead me to think because of the size that the Muncie isn't.
Simply asking out of curiosity- and to learn

Re: which 3 speed standard

The muncie is non-synchro 1st. The saginaw and borg warner are synchronized trans.

Re: which 3 speed standard

The 2nd pic I posted above is a saginaw 4 speed. Here is the saginaw 3. They look identical, but the 4 speed has the 3rd lever for reverse. This is the 3speed

Re: which 3 speed standard

there were 2 different tail shafts on the muncie, one short (like in your pic) has a rear cross-member pad. (these were used in 1958-64 cars with the x frame) and i guess 60-65 trucks? the long tail shaft (with no rear mount) was used in 55-? trucks and 55-57 cars. their is different drive shafts for the long and short. myself i have never seen a short shaft in a truck of any year. is using stock column muncie--if floor i would use the sag/sync if thats what you have.

Some one correct me if I am wrong, but the 66 transmission was synchronized in 1st gear where the earlier ones were not. ?? Kieth
