My first ever car show.....

So I finally got the glass back in the truck, sat at motorvehicle for two hours to get tags, and rushed home to finally drive the truck on the road for the first time ever. Well my luck would have it the stupid hurricane came by and dropped some rain most of Friday night. Well Saturday morning I wake up excited as could be and headed off to a small show in Kissimmee.

Truck drove great!! I was so nervous something would happen but no problems at all. I made it to the show, it was small, only about maybe 40 cars. Right away the truck got lots of attention. Met a few nice people and after drove home to get ready for the weekly cruise at Old Towne. Super excited I hop in the truck and cruise down the highway. I'm only two miles from my destination when the truck starts to pull to one side, the I hear it... Boom!! blown front tire. I was so pissed and bumbed out!!

So this was how my great day ended....

Even though it was short lived my first time out was still a good one and I'm shopping for a new tire already....

Truck looks great, even on a tilt back. Glad you made it to the show and had a good time in spite of the tire. I find those small events are usually the most fun. Did you figure out what went wrong with the tire?

Re: My first ever car show.....

Yes, it was lack of alignment.. I was in a hurry to drive the truck and didnt get it to the shop to get the alignment done. I figured I would do it this week sometime. Between the tire riding on the inner portion of the tread and a slight push (toe out) it created so much heat it blew the inner sidewall.

It was all my fault and in reality it could have ended much worse. I'm sure both tires are junk now and I planned to buy new ones soon, just not this soon. I guess I learned the hard way so its off to the alignment shop this week with new tires.......

You made it home is what counts. I'm sure you've heard worse situautions. A tire can easily be replaced. BTW your truck looks sweet on that pic.

Re: My first ever car show.....

Congrats on the shake down run and the car show. Flat tire is not bad considering some of the horror stories I've read here. You'll be back on the road in no time.

Re: My first ever car show.....

Moto, first off your truck turned out awesome. I just finished going through your build and it's encouraging. I know on my truck , also a 66 stepside, I have to replace both rocker panels as well as some rust repairs on the hood and front fenders. Seeing the amount of rust you had on your truck makes mine look rust free. You mentioned that you were inexperienced in doing the body work but did you already have welding and metal fab experience?
I am tempted to blatantly copy your truck.....nicely done.

I really had no experience at all when I started this build. It was just a $400 rust bucket that I saw something in. I just took my time and learned along the way by trial and error. I did everything inside my two car garage just a few hours each night. I even painted it in the garage and driveway.

All I can say is go for it. I knew my truck was never going to be a high dollar show truck but something I could take pride in knowing I did it all by myself. I dont have to worry about chips and scratches in this paint job..

You have a great resource which is this site. I learned a lot from here and Youtube videos. I say go for it

Thanks for all the kind words and keep us posted!

He had quite the look on his face when he saw it sitting so low on the side of the road. He told me he was worried he would never get it on the flat bed until I aired up the bags. Definetley put a smile on his face... Lol

Re: My first ever car show.....

You can do your own alighnment. get the truck sitting at ride height.center your steering wheel.get your wheels straight with about a 1/16-1/8 toe in.take a sheet of flat material and lay it flat against outside of tire. take your tape measure and check the distance form outside to outside both front of tire and back.this will get front end pretty darn close.Ive done 3 vehicles like that and all go perfectly straight down the road. no uneven tire wear.I had a 55 second series with a camaro sub frame. called a bunch of local shops.none could figure it out. took it to a reputible locak rod builder and watched as he used this method.ive done 2 others myself. truck drove great.give it a shot. good luck.

I'll keep that one in mind. There is a guy up the road that said he will get it done for $55 complete. If he cant do it I will try your method. Thanks!!
