This TBI !!!! Smh Burning gas

Ok so I got smoke coming out my pipes I'm almost sure it's gas but have no idea how to get the right set on a tbi and let's not talk about what it's doing to my pockets I have a flow from the pocket to the gas station to the tank that needs to be plugged fast anyone no how to get this mixture right will I need some kinda computer is something for this EGR or something

Well not many people have the joy in discussing the TBI. but i feel your pain. my quadrajet or timing is acting up. Do you have a haynes book to look at trouble shooting or maybe a chilton? i can guide you through

Oh yea please do check you catalatic convertors, those may be clogged and cause something of the sort. it could also be worse, fires have been known to happen. sounds like catalatic convertors too.

Just rebuild and replace it all, that's what I did! Cost $40 I don't know enough to say for sure but all your sensors and valves work together with your ECM to manage fuel. So one sensor bad will cause half a dozen different components to compensate for an inaccurate reading the computer is getting from a bad sensor and all of a sudden your running lean or rich.

Idle Air sensor ran $9
TBI rebuild ran $28 (included a new FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR)
Can-O-Carb cleaner $3-4

Took 10-15 min to remove the TBI, 30-45 min to clean all the pieces, 30 min to rebuild it, and 10-15 min to re-install it.

Unfortunately that wasn't my problem, was the ignition module, but I at least knew that my Throttle body was in good shape.


Thoughts from a newb

A few questions first, does it idle smoothly? Obviously it is running rich, what does the coolant temp show? Have you replaced the coolant temp sensor on the intake? If so, are any of the other sensors new? If not, start with the idle air control and the coolant temp sensor previously mentioned. Check all the gaskets and vacuum hoses for leaks. Easy way to check gaskets is take a can of carb cleaner and spray around intake perimeter and base of TBI unit while running. If it bogs down at a particular spot, mark it and replace that gasket.
There are a lot of threads on here about TBI related problems. I by no means am an expert, but am learning as I tune/fix mine. Try some or all of these things out and let us know what changes.

That helps a lot I have a 86 first year of the TBI not sure if it has all the sensors you talking about but I think I have a leak on the intake didn't want to open her up but think its going to have to come off the coolant temp gauge is aftermarket but it works and it's not running hot will let u no what happens with the intake

No problem! Just a little more fyi for those of us not familiar with your setup. Do you have a 350? Stock trim, or built up a little? Have you taken apart the engine for any reason? Not trying to pry, but the more info given, the better the answers you get!

I just looked at a rebuild on YouTube not hard crazy I had it off and clean it but was not sure about taken the injectors out now I'm going to buy the kit clean it and change the little gaskets and the regulator if that's not the problem I'm going to the intake

No problem kinda ashame so don't lol to hard I got this one a few months ago it was said to have been hit buy a tree on the cab and the cab replaced with an older model 81 I have a 86 frame and motor but it's the late 86 2wd 350 5.7 out the factor first of the tbi the dude I got it from wanted to make it a hot rod and discounted all the emssions stuff coming from the minfolds and plugged the holes and but some ugly crome value covers on i don't no much but I'm a army vet do it your self guy and want to put the work in to turn this thing around not a fan of the hot rod just want a solid Chevy I'm going to take some pics to let you guy see for your self I think the guy I got it from was pretty good to even try doing mods on this thing but he was pretty cheap and sloppy

No problem! I myself am a former Marine, and have strong feelings against anyone I dont know touching anything I own. So I fully feel your pain on wanting the truck to be a solid running vehicle. The good thing is, the parts are relatively cheap to get it back to a good running stock trim truck. Don't know how much knowledge of these trucks you have, but the camshafts in these engines are great for making arrow shafts. So if you end up tearing into the motor very far, a top end rebuild will save you money in the long run. Looking forward to seeing the pics!

The rebuild is super easy. I had rebuilt a couple of carbs back in the day, used the instructions the whole way through of course, and the TBI was WAYYY easier. Plug the ports to your intake with some clean rags so nothing gets down inside and use a gasket scraper to remove all the old gasket so everything seats properly. Use carb cleaner and stick the spray straw into all the little ports and make sure there is unrestricted flow coming out the other end of the ports. The cylinder shaped sensor coming out the back right (passenger) side is your idle air sensor, go the extra mile and just pick one up new (I got mine for $9 on eBay). Make sure there is a vacuum line coming off all the ports on the bottom front side of the throttle body and that all the lines go to and connect somewhere . Also blow on the vacuum lines to make sure they are not clogged.

Like I said, even if your issue is somewhere else, its a good starting point and it eliminates the TB as the issue.

And like wyattglock said, Parts are cheap for these trucks. If an older vehicle is new to you then you really don't know how its been driven or maintained. You don't know if the parts under the hood are original or if they have been replaced and when.

yes it has to be fuel regulator. I recomend a different setup as well for the vacuum operated air density to mass airflow sensor or check if its even there. could be a problem also if the guy switched the TBI from a big block and tryed running it. gas in the oil is the main problem, just saying those big block tbi's werent meant for the 350
