Re: overheating

When the engine is cold and at idle pull the rad cap and full with water. Do you have a water temp gauge as well?

Re: overheating

Sounds like you got air in there and you need to burp the system. Park the truck on some kind of incline, like ramps or something, and take the radiator cap off. Start it and let it run to its normal operating temperature. Let it run that way for a while. If its got air in there you'll see the radiator bubbling and gushing as the air escapes. Once its done just add more and its fixed. If indeed your problem was air in the system.

Re: overheating

if the waterpump is leaking best to change it and thrw a thermostat while youre at it then add proper fluid and burp then the thing is properly fixed

Don't know if you have a electric water pump or not. There is a way that they can run backwards, I don't know if it's possible on the others. I've seen it before, had a buddy and his ride was overheating and couldn't find out why, come to find out it was running backwards.

Re: overheating

If that leak is coming from the weep hole (top of the pump) you can know for sure the pump is pooping out on you, and will need to be replaced. New stat never hurts while your there.

Re: overheating

If your water pump is leaking then it needs to be replaced (along with thermostat as suggested above.) I recommend getting an AC Delco pump from one of the OEM online vendors,( since it is a bit of a PITA to work on you only want to do it once.) Before you start the surgery, also make sure that you fan clutch is working properly - go with Delco on that also.

If you google the usual suspects you can often find a discount coupon for those OEM vendors. I have used all of the following with good results:

AutoPartsTomorrow.com
oewarehouse.com
oehq.com
gmpartsdirect.com
rockauto.com

Also, just google the OEM part number (you can get that from the Rock Auto online catalog) and see if any good deals turn up on other sites (like Amazon, Ebay, etc.) Delco parts can often be purchased for less cost than good brand aftermarket parts.

Re: overheating

Yeah, sounds like a pump for sure. I have a great luck recently with several rockauto parts. If your not in a hurry and can wait for the shipping, the price is much better.

The factory gauges are junk get aftermarket with new sender and wire imo.

On two different trucks (one an 82, and one an 87) the stock gauge was over 30 degrees off from reality. You can't trust that stock gauge. And with your overheating problem, you need to be sure.

Or if you can't do all that right now, at least get this. Point it at the water neck. (the thermostat housing thing)
