What engines options were there in a 66 GMC Step-side? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My Grandfather left me a 66 GMC Step-side... Not sure of the current engine, I do know it's an inline 6 with a 3-speed MT. Also not sure if it's a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton. To be honest, I'm a rookie when it comes to trucks, I've always been a Camaro man myself.

Any help y'all can give me would be greatly appreciated. I want to restore this thing but I want to restore it with MY prefered options on it.

BTW- 6-lug wheels generally mean 1/2 ton, 8 lug wheels-3/4 ton

Well, the fronts are 6 but the rears are 5... Hmmm, I'll have to look into that one and see what's up. I'd like to make them all 5 since I have some old (but still really nice) Camaro Ralleye's that would look great on it. That's a 5 x 4.75" bolt pattern.

Sounds like someone pulled your Dana 44 and replaced it with something else. 10 or 12 bolt with a better gear ratio would be my guess. You can have your fronts redrilled for 5 lug.

Hmmm, I wonder then, is it possible that there are spindles out there from another car that will fit it? What about Camaro spindles? I've got plenty of those lay'n around that are in perfect condition.

As far as the rear end goes, looks like I'm gonna have to do some homework and find out what it was originally from.

i was told 68 camaro up will bolt disc brakes up to your stock spindles, so i'm told. i jsut got a 65 c-10 on sunday. brand new dealer brochure & owners manual both list in 65-230ci. L6 with 8.5:1 140hp 220 torque ac46-n spark plug, 230 ci. L6* 125 hp 210 torq ac44 plug, 292ci. L6 8:1 comp.170 hp 210 torq ac-c42-n plugs, 283 V8 9:1 175 hp 275 torq ac44 plugs
color ident:
230 125hp &140hp = blue color from factory,
292 L6 170hp= green
283 V8 175 hp =gray
trans options: a3spd, 3spd hd, 4spd, powerglide
diff opt: 4.11:1
3.07:1
3.73:1
beleive hdd 3 spd is warner trans

These engines are the same used in Chevrolet Trucks, and GMC Handi-vans. Also these are the same engine used in Canadian Chevy and GMC trucks.
