Need some help with a drive shaft.

Here's the story. I have a 68 shortbed that I have put a lt1 4l60e combo in. I plan to lower this truck and want to go with a two piece drive shaft. I need some pics of what carrier to use. Mine came with no such thing. The previous owner mounted the horseshoe carrier to a piece of angle iron behind where the carrier would normally be. I have the bracket for the round style carrier. Can someone post a pic of how this might work or any input on how to make this work. Round or horseshoe style, is one better than the other. Need help. I wanna drive this thing!

Re: Need some help with a drive shaft.

I can take a pic of my carrier, should be the same cause all you will need to do is shorten or extend one of the drive shafts, either the front piece or rear. the carrier will be the same and should mount in the same spot if measured correct. just find a 68 short bed truck that had a two pieve DL and take the entire thing and go from there. should not be that hard to find

Re: Need some help with a drive shaft.

Here is mine, it should be the style you need. I also have another shaft with a slightly different carrier but either will do, since they were on my 72LB... carriers are the same.

Pics can be decieving, but here goes...It looks to me that the rear shaft is a tad short? I saw that you had a vib issue in the driveline, just trying to help To check, you might run a "sharpie", across the splines, & pull the rear shaft, to see how deep the shaft is buried on the spline. You should not need more that 1" of slide on the center yolk, but should have a good 3 -3 1/2" of the spline buried. If you have her sorted out, disregard this post, & have fun playin crazyl

Re: Need some help with a drive shaft.

crazyL your spot on, I know it is short, I went with the one I bought from a local chevy guy and it ended up being short.... I measured my DL I took off and it is 3 inch longer than this one., so I am adding the TH400 yoke with a combination ujoint and installing.... according to my measurments it will be perfecr.... but I wont know until i get under there...

Re: Need some help with a drive shaft.

Shouldn't your carrier be on the cross member as well? Mine was mounted on a piece of angle iron from the previous owner. I have since found the right bracket for the carrier and am in the process of putting it back together. I assume the angle iron is the in correct way

Re: Need some help with a drive shaft.

As long as your angles are correct it doesn't matter how the center support bearing is mounted, as long as its solid to the frame. Front shaft parallel to the frame (unless to correct for more than 3* angle of rear shaft). If you need more than 3* up to 6* movement you need a double cardin style joint.
