Went back to oil filter adapter, what tall filter do I use?
I went original with my 283 V8 by using the old canister type oil filter. I guess my brother over tightened the filter and ruined the seal. I'm going back with the oil filter adapter. I read that a larger filter could be used on these trucks (there's lots of room) just don't remember the part number. The regular filter used is fram PH5

Pf1A I think, its actually a tall Ford filter in the aftermarket adapter kits that bolt to the block and run a remote set up.

Re: Went back to oil filter adapter, what tall filter do I use?
a new seal should come with every new filter and be dug out and replaced every time.
but if it were me, i'd use the spin on adapter too. make sure you have a new seal under it too. the spin on filter has a bypass if it gets plugged, the canister does not. it just chokes the oil flow it used to be that the spin on filters cost a lot more, now they both cost a lot more the long spin on is ph13

Re: Went back to oil filter adapter, what tall filter do I use?
The filter that I ordered with the adapter which was listed as the "tall" filter is a Champ PH1218. I never heard of Champ filters before. Any info on these filters? What is the best filter out there? I hear that Fram sucks. I don't have my exhaust finalized yet but I'm going with stock ram type exhaust manifolds going straight down and out. The taller filter should fit

I have seen longer filters, like quart size. Will these work?

Re: Went back to oil filter adapter, what tall filter do I use?
I think the PH13 Fram will work. Look at the Champ filter and see where the O-Ring is....is it on the outer perimeter or closer to the center? If I remember right there were a couple of different adapters used to replace the canister filters, one used the Chevy filters and the other one used the Ford filters. Fram makes great filters, we have used them for years on all our race stuff. A lot of times you hear people bad mouth filters its because of their own mistakes. I worked auto parts when I was younger and most popular brands of filters are good and comparable quality wise.

1218 is the short number for the A/C Delco GM filter I use on my big block. Can't beat an OE filter, swing by the dealer and check one out.

Re: Went back to oil filter adapter, what tall filter do I use?
Here is a listing of filters that cross with the Champ ph1218
http://www.v8dieseltech.net/oil/gm_65_oil.htm If it were me I would go with the Napa Gold version of their 1060 or the Wix 5160/5160MP Both are high quality filters with top reputations. Make sure you leave the bypass valve under the adapter when you install the adapter on the block. If you don't the filter doesn't work right and you end up cracking the adapter. Also you have to have a gasket under the adapter or it will leak there. I've pulled canister filters off Chevy engines and found as many as three gaskets on them because people didn't pull the old gaskets out when they changed filters. Many but obviously not all of the adapters use a Ford filter so you want to make sure of how the filter gasket mates up with the surface on the adapter if you use and adapter.
