Re: Been apart to long or bad memory?
The heat riser always goes on the driver side, and the shaft I believe is in parallel to the block.

Re: Been apart to long or bad memory?
Driver's side on my original 350. Here's a picture before the disassembly. I believe the passenger cars were on the right.

Re: Been apart to long or bad memory?
My K20 originally had it on the passenger side...

Re: Been apart to long or bad memory?
First owner is correct. Lift side.
Missing from that picture is all of the heat stove tin and the tube to the manifold. That is why the heat riser is in that side. Posted via Mobile Device |

Edit: I know it goes to the snorkel, which in the pic above is to the driver's side. ... just thinking my snorkel may have been to the pass. side, but it's been way too many years ago for me to remember.

Re: Been apart to long or bad memory?
Look inside the air cleaner. The lower half the snorkel is attached to should be stamped with a notch. The notch would fit the shape of a Q-jet. Small blocks in these trucks used a spacer between the carb and air cleaner. The spacer should have a tab that lines up the notch. With everything lined up the snorkel should point to the left just over the alternator.

Re: Been apart to long or bad memory?
1973 and up the snorkel faces right and no spacer. By 1976 the was a cold air tube added that attached to core support.

Re: Been apart to long or bad memory?
It happens to me more than I like to admit. Thank god for witness marks and photos and other members trucks. I believe that the manifold that the heat riser goes to will be machined flat all the way across and if my memory (not very good) is correct, there is even a flat gasket that goes between the manifold and the heat riser. I also believe that all of the chock tubes ran through the passenger side manifold because that is the side the chock is on the carb.
And yes, it does depend on application if the heat riser is mounted on the driver or passenger side. Hope I helped, Merry Christmas, Tom |

Re: Been apart to long or bad memory?
Sorry Stocker, I confused your post and thought you were talking about the small choke tube that heats the choke spring. I understand you are talking about the tin and tube that directs hot air into the air cleaner housing. With that said, I don't recall any of the 12 small block 67-72 chevy pickups I have owned being on the passenger side.

The only thing missing from original in the picture is the heat shield above the 2 front plugs to protect the wires from the manifold heat. The heat stove and tin are not missing. It's a 69 3/4 ton and never had the stove and tube, only the PCV valve and carb collar with the hose to the flame arrestor on the right valve cover. The truck was produced in Fremont, CA, and I bought it new in Yorba Linda, CA. I seem to recall that some (all?) 1/2 tons had the heat stove on them in 69, but I'm not sure what year they actually started on the 1/2 tons. 1967-1972 was a period of rapidly changing emissions regulations, especially in California, and for a while, the higher GVWR trucks had less stringent requirements. So, what's correct for one year is not necessarily correct for every year or, for that matter, every geographic location. Back on topic. I don't think any of this affects where the heat riser is placed. Its purpose is to force heated exhaust under the carb to speed warm-up and prevent carburetor icing. I don't believe there is any relationship with the heat stove and tube. Jim |
