Inside Bedside Gas Filler

Hey Guys,

We were discussing inner bedside gas fillers on 62Vair's thread last week and Iron-Butt asked for some details so here is how I did mine.

I am not sure how 62Vair did his, he might have some better ideas. My approach is a little complicated but it worked out nice.

I started with a RCI fuel cell snout and cap. Summit's description is messed up. The snout is steel, the filler cap is aluminum and seals with an o-ring. It is a nice piece and not too expensive. I could have welded a snout on the backside of it and connected a hose directly but I didn't want to mess up the powder coat and I wanted something very rigid, the bedside metal is not very thick.

Re: Inside Bedside Gas Filler

Mines basically the same, except I used the blazer tank and my vent goes back up into the filler.
Filler neck came from saddle tanks that the PO had installed.

Nice work and great detail and I love the referrence to things not lining up (first pic in post #2). I can relate to that.

That looks pretty good! Does the cap screw or press on?? I can't tell from the pics.

Thanks for the kind words men.

See Ten -- The cap screws onto an o-ring for a good seal.

Re: Inside Bedside Gas Filler

Mines a little different, I used an old filler neck and was able to put a locking cap on it. (I try to keep the truck a cleaner but my neighbors have a giant elm tree and man that's a dirty tree. Always something falling off of it)

Re: Inside Bedside Gas Filler

The fuel filler turned out to fill too slowly at the gas pump. I decided that the problem was the 90 degree miter joint on the filler tube. The gas goes down and bounces off the bottom of the angle joint, and spits back.

I had a 90 degree stainless elbow left over from some radiator pipes so I decided to replace the 90 degree miter joint. I welded the elbow in as shown in the picture.

The fill now is much better but not great. You can't just lock the pump nozzle and go but the fill time is reasonable and gas doesn't tend to spit back out the snout if you over do it. I guess the remaining issue is the long horizontal path the fuel has to travel to reach the tank after the elbow.

Re: Inside Bedside Gas Filler

Well,

After using the filler for several weeks I have learned how fast to fill it and don't get any spit backs. It will fill up into the neck and then cut off just like you want. Pretty quick fill, no problem. The mitre joint was the real problem.

I like the looks of that and as tall as my truck will be no one will ever see it and you got it from summit? was it just the cap and piece thru the bed or was it all the black pieces? thanks for the pics also
