High torque starter wiring question.
I just ordered a high torque starter for my 71 and I have a wiring question. My old starter has the "S" and "R" terminals. The new high torque starter I ordered has only a "S" terminal. My question is once I connect the "S" wire to my high torque starter do I just tap off the old "R" wire from My old starter?

Re: High torque starter wiring question.
That depends on if you have HEI or not. The "R" wire is for the points ignition.

Re: High torque starter wiring question.
The "R" wire provides full voltage to the coil during cranking, to give the points ignition system a jump. You would be ahead to go with an electronic ignition(HEI), if you don't already have one.

Re: High torque starter wiring question.
Fold it over back against itself and wrap it with electrical tape.

Re: High torque starter wiring question.
Howdy - similar question, I don't have HEI. Stock. I have a high torque with one terminal. How do I wire the purple and yellow wire?
DISREGARD ....exhaust too tight right now...mini starter won't fit without modifying exhaust

me i'd check into weather the resistance wire has been eliminated and a dedicated 12V wire run to fire the HEI correctly folding over and taping up and lettin things just dangel away as loose ends invites a further problem in the future when it is the least opportune time like at midnight in the middle of nowhere in a rainstorm
