refinishing some rally wheels

well, i picked up some rally's, rings, and caps for 80 bucks. they needed refinishing but weren't terrible.

i used scotchbrite abrasive wheels on my drill, a grey to do the work and a red to get in the tight spots. i was very pleased with how fast it removed material.

now i'm at a crossroads, the wheels are prepped for painting and i can't make up my mine on whether i want to paint them black or white. if i go black, i'm putting on astro center caps and trim rings. if i go white i'll run chrome caps and probably no rings...but not sure.

here is the progress.....

I don't think I've seen a set painted white. What color is the truck? Can you show the scotch brite discs you used? It sure did work well.

Re: refinishing some rally wheels

john, currently the K5 is black. below is a picture. i'm going to two-tone it though. white and black. the cab and topper will be white, and it will have a white stripe down the middle in 81-87 fashion with a red pinstripe to break them up. i'll see about snapping some photos of the discs i used, i picked them up at wally world.

this is the paint scheme, except my cab will be white on the entire b-piller.

Re: refinishing some rally wheels

I like that two-tone, obviously it looks good with the black wheels. I'd do that over white. White might make it look too much like the plain white wagon wheels. Sorry I forgot which truck was yours.

Re: refinishing some rally wheels

This is about the best I can do. Photo of a fresh white wheel, an old K5 I had for a bit had white rallies and my trailer has white rallies. If I had it to do over again my 87 truck would have white rallies instead of red. I think it'd make the lower two tone pop more.

Re: refinishing some rally wheels

well here is the painted product. i'm not going to get too crazy with them right now, when i repaint next spring, i'll finish them with better paint and clear coat them. i think i'm going to do more of an off white with my paint scheme also....

polished the caps and lug nuts that came with them...they aren't show quality, but will suit a driver well.

set a trim ring on just to see if i liked it or not, the jury is still out. there should be some new spinners coming in the mail with corvette flags on an orange background in the middle.

can't wait to get my new tires mounted up next week!

Re: refinishing some rally wheels

well, finally got some new cooper discoverer h/t's put on...235/75R15's in a 6 ply. wow, they ride so much better and are considerably quieter than those stingers that were on it!

got the spinners in the mail and mounted on the caps, here is a quick pick of them on a wheel. need to rub the wheels out before i'm done, but i'm very happy with the look, still undecided on beauty rings.....

Re: refinishing some rally wheels

I don't like the original beauty rings anymore, all I use now is Astro van beauty rings. You can get them new for around $45 on ebay. They aren't as wide and fit perfectly - I've used them on the last two sets of rally's I've redone.

Your truck looks great.

EDIT: thanks for sharing the removal tool you used, I've got one of those but its from Harbor Freight. Your wheels cleaned up so well I had to make sure I had one of those.

Yessir. Used them on my daughter's 94 too. These are 15x8's with 275/60's.

Re: refinishing some rally wheels

I bet that truck looks good going down the road, love the spinners. I'd be tempted to try painting the wiper arms semi-gloss black to see how it looks. But probably only after finding a good spare set. Good looking truck!
