Neutral Safety Switch - Reverse Lights

Hi All,

My reverse lights come on in Neutral. (72 Suburban)

1) Looks like an easy fix - looks like I loosen the bolts to the neutral safety switch at the top of the steering column - just before it enters the engine compartment - and move the assembly around til the back up lights come on - IS THIS CORRECT? By moving the neutral safety switch (there is room to move for the brackets) am I also messing with the starting in P and N ('cause that works fine - just the reverse lights are off).

2) If the above is true - it looks really hard to get a wrench in there to loosen the bolts - anyone done this with common tools - or do I need something special?

Thanks....new here to the board (and to the world of 1972 Suburbans) and really appreciate all that I've learned and read so far.

Re: Neutral Safety Switch - Reverse Lights

You have the right idea, and there are no special tools needed.

Re: Neutral Safety Switch - Reverse Lights

sorry to bring this back from the dead. Its not a special tool. its a 1/4" socket head. The one on the left side is a real pita to get a tool in to it. I dug out an old barely working really small ratchet and was able to loosen it enough that I could switch to a deep socket 1/4" and loosen it the rest of the way by hand.
I normal size ratchet wont fit and its at a weird enough angle it really sucked.

I got it though
