What rear end should I be looking out for?
Ok So I'm about to install my MII and 4 link kit on my 1957 chevy 3200.
So now is the time I suppose I should be looking for a rear end. But I am clueless when it comes to driveshafts and rear ends..... I searched a past thread to find out the stock is 62" wide. But the thread was geared toward the AD trucks so thats all I got out of it lol. I am gonna be keeping on eye on craigslist and classifieds for rear ends, but what should I be looking for? My mechanic said to look out for a ford 9" due to my power output. I found a posting for a rear end with disc brakes to a 2005 chevy pickup for 100 bucks, but he couldnt tell me if it had limited slip or posi or what not. Is there a way to tell just by looking at it? Heres my specs of the truck if it were finished. 1957 Chevy 3200 97" likely will be changed to the shorter longbed. 2006 6.0 LQ4 turbocharged(8-12lbs) with 4L80E or 4L60 Nolimit.net complete suspension set.(Already ordered with air bags all around) http://www.nolimitparts.com/prodinfo...mber=CHPACK-55 5 on 5 lug pattern. Preferably rear disk brake. I want atleast limited slip like my 90 SS454 had cuz it was way too much fun. As I said, I'm banging my head against the wall here. I never really paid attention to rear ends before. Your wisdom will be appreciated!! |

Re: What rear end should I be looking out for?
The rearend in my 57 Chevy pickup is out of a 64 to 67 Chevelle the overall width is 60 inches wide. You could get either a 10 bolt or a 12 bolt with or without posi.
On a posi track rearend turn one axle by hand if both turn the same direction its posi , if the other side turns in the oppisite direction its not posi. Gene |

Re: What rear end should I be looking out for?
No spacers , I'm running a pair of vintage American mags that are 8 1/2 x 15 with 275 x 15 BF Goodrich TA's ,they fit perfect. The 10 or 12 bolt rearend out of a 68 to 72 Chevelle is an inch wider at 61 inches. The 60 inch wide rearend was a perfect fit for me.

Re: What rear end should I be looking out for?
read some builds, we all used something different in our trucks.
hauling, racing, towing or fuel economy all require different set ups

Re: What rear end should I be looking out for?
I am using a 1979 trans Am rear end disc brake version with 15x8 corvette ralleys . It actually fits better than the stock rear with 15x8 truck ralleys.

I have a ford 9" from a 70's bronco and it was the perfect width. It is easy to change the gears and put in a posi.
