Satin help

I'm about to put my tpc global satin black on my truck and was wondering if I needed to clear coat it. Also if I do clear coat it will it take away from the matte finish? Any help would be appreciated.

If you pray.. oh you said satin not satan, sorry my bad. The satin finish paints are a base coat/clear coat type and do have a clear for them. the clear is where the gloss retenion and holdout come from. This is the main reason why what you shoot is what you get on a flat /satin or matte/semi type paint, no cut and buff stages after the application of the clear coats. If you were to run into trouble say to fix a run or a large thrash problem [I have problems with my shops sprayed in insulation falling into my stuff . That was just one reason I had De Villbiss sent me a paintbooth.] you will put a smal amount of gloss where you sand and rub out the mistake. There are clears in a wide range of glosses other than the standard[ or at least there used to be] it may take some looking to find them but the standard semi or matte will look great on your project, since that is what you are looking for. No need for clear if it's single stage,otherwise you gotta use a clear with flattening agent mixed in

Ask TCP Global. They have people there 7 days week. I was under the impression Hot Rod Flatz was a single stage,but they could tell you for sure.

I sprayed my inner fenders with tcp's black hot rod flats and it's pretty shinny. thought it would be more flat. here's a pic--the rad support is a satin not hot rod flats.

I like spraying normal clear or single stage urethane with a matting agent added in so you can get the exact look you want. More flattener= duller finish.

We just painted the firewall on a '70 El Camino with single stage urethane, flattened with PPG One Choice flattening agent. We mixed three parts paint (just paint, no hardener or thinner) to one part flattener, or 33.3%. Then added the right amount of hardener/reducer.

It looked like this:








I also painted a set of headlight rings for a '55 International pickup recently using the same urethane single stage with 25% flattener.






The inside of these doors were painted with PPG 2021 clear with flattener mixed 1:1.






And a Jeep I painted with 2021 clear and flattnener, also mixed 1:1.

It will die down some. At least my easywood satin SS did. It was shinny till it spent some time outside.

i'm a big fan of lessonal mat clear.lessonal is a sikkens company and we use it at the shop i work at.the mat clear mixes 3/1/1,i like it cause you have the same sheen every mix and i'm a big fan of consistancy.we used it on the inside of my father in laws 63 chevy truck and he was very pleased.
