Hot Rod's Big Bang Theory
http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/h...g_bang_theory/
I decided to look up the article. Nice info. After reading it, I would't be surprised if 4.8 motors started showing in more classic vehicles. |

Re: Hot Rod's Big Bang Theory
I myself prefer the 4.8 to the 5.3 for daily driving. It is more forgiving to cruising rpm then the 5.3, and this is from my personal experience.
Most swappers are after hp, and not mpg. My current build plan is to use the 4200 Vortec, and see what is possible mpg wise. I am hoping for a mpg and cost vs buying a new car as my job situation gets back to normal along with my long commutes. |

Re: Hot Rod's Big Bang Theory
The 4.8 is a great little motor. Many of the late model UPS trucks in my building are 4.8 powered. Here's one waiting to be dropped in a truck. The old one was at 200K when the oil pump developed problems. Not bad for the abuse we give them.

Re: Hot Rod's Big Bang Theory
Sweet, I would like to see a price list on parts. I wonder what it would do on my 6.0L?
I know the down fall of a n/a 4.8 or 5.3 is the small bore shrouds the valve flow, but that does not appear to be a problem when boosted... Nice find! thanks... |

Re: Hot Rod's Big Bang Theory
How about a 5.3 turbo and 4.8 turbo going at it?
So ya convinced yet? 4.8 is crazy and different. Man, now I'm really considering not retiring my 96 Jimmy. It has a 4.3. A 4.8 is just a little bigger but I can add about 50% more HP. |

Re: Hot Rod's Big Bang Theory
Turbo 4.8's have been popular for a while now. They are pretty sweet!

Re: Hot Rod's Big Bang Theory
I had a buddy who bought a 4.8L core a few years ago that needed to be overbored. Couldn't find a singe manufacturer that made a piston for an overbored 4.8, even .010 over for a good torque plate hone. Plenty for the 5.3 and larger, but nothing for the little guy.

Re: Hot Rod's Big Bang Theory
5.7 LS? With a cam swap, a 5.7 would give my ZZ4 a run for it's money.

My tuner's truck is an 04 sierra....was orginally a 4.8 with a rear mount turbo it put down 475(11lbs) to the tires stock motor with a cam....it run lean and burnt a piston....now it has a forged 5.7( 5.3 bored out to 346ci) and it put down 620ish on 15lbs...truck is a monster on the street and gets almost as good on mpg if you can keep ya foot out of it....foose04 over on pt.net put down 919hp on a stock 4.8 shortblock

Stock bottom end world record for 5.3 is 996 to the ground. Stock bottom end even heads.
