Advice needed on Transfer case upgrade
Hello Guys, I gotta ask for some more advice. I have a 66 Chevy K10 with a straight six, muncie 318 3 speed manual, and a divorced Rockwell T221. I never liked the loud whine from the T221, so I wasn't too upset when a bearing cap cracked, and I wasn't able to find a replacement. From what I've read on the forum, a popular thing to do is to switch to the NP 205. I've been told to look for a transfer case from an 1100 or 1200 international truck, but that sounds incredibly difficult to find. I have the Dana 44 front end, so i need a passenger drop. On to my questions.
1) Would it be hard to find a divorced NP205, so I can keep my Muncie 318, and what models of vehicles should I look for to make sure it will work right? (I'm worried about rotation direction and such) 2) Would I be better off replacing my transmission also, so I could use a mated NP 205? I really don't want to get away from the three on the tree. 3) Any other ideas? Thanks for taking the time to help out. Last edited by cwolfe; 03-14-2013 at 07:21 PM. Reason: Left out info |

Re: Advice needed on Transfer case upgrade
any early 70's light duty IHC (inc scouts) and dodges used a right hand drop independent 205. the dodge has weird yokes though. one should be able to take a r/hand drop from a married unit and gut it and put in everything from a left hand drop ford independent 205. it is just the case that is different. I would do a little research on that if you can't find a complete one. I know where there is an IHC one but it is a little ways from you
I have one of those caps that you need. I have a T221 with a toothache that I am going to take apart. UI am taking it apart for someone else here who needs some pieces. I may be able to help you if he doesn't need what you do. sounds like your bearings wore out and the the shaft backed into that rear cap ron Last edited by padresag; 03-14-2013 at 08:00 PM. |

Re: Advice needed on Transfer case upgrade
Thanks for your help. Yes, I think that's what happened. I rebuilt the case, and it seems like that bearing is sticking out to far. Probably did something wrong. Anyway, I don't want to spend more money on that transfer case that's so loud. I found an 87 Blazer with a granny 4-speed and married np205, so I'm thinking of going with that.

Re: Advice needed on Transfer case upgrade
I had a cap break on the first T221 I had in my 63. I used the plasma cutter and made a flange and welded an 1 1/2 in pipe cap to it, worked great! If you didnt live so far Id love to take that rockwell off your hands!

Re: Advice needed on Transfer case upgrade
Fabricating a cap is not a bad idea. Did you also have to make the little passages for oil?

Re: Advice needed on Transfer case upgrade
I made mine for the upper white metal cap, I didnt make any holes but the hole for the shaft was just big enough to be over the outter race on the bearing, I didnt have any problems but maybe i got lucky!

Re: Advice needed on Transfer case upgrade
The transfer case in a '87 Blazer will not be a 205 unless someone put one in it. I believe the original transfer case should be a 208. The 208 has an aluminum case, whereas the 205 is cast iron.

Re: Advice needed on Transfer case upgrade
If it's loud there is a problem. I have had one for 30 years (2 diffenrent cases) and they don't whine.

Re: Advice needed on Transfer case upgrade
Thanks for the help guys. I fabricated a cap for the t221, and I bought the Blazer. I'm converting to a SM 465/NP208, and selling the Muncie 318 and T221.

Re: Advice needed on Transfer case upgrade
I'm going to try to fit the SM465/NP208 under my low floor hump. Anyone know if it will work? I might have to cut an oversize hole.

Re: Advice needed on Transfer case upgrade
I don't think that SM465 is going to fit under a low hump floor.
