Suburban Carpet

Hi All,

I haven't posted in a while but have been doing a lot of lurking. I have a 66' Burb, I posted a picture awhile back when the request went out for Suburban pictures. Bagged, yellow with matching steelies, anyway to my question.

Does anyone make a carpet kit for the mid-sixties Suburbans? I can find them for the 67' and up Burbs but have yet to find one for a early model.

So, if I can't buy a pre-made carpet could I buy a truck carpet for the front area and buy some extra matching carpet for the rest? My guess is this might not look so good.

Any ideas Burb guy's, what did you do for carpet?

Thats exactly what I did, Dave. I actually went thru JCWhitney.....I dont remember why. I bought high hump carpet and 3 extra yards.....4 or 5 would allow complete coverage to the gate. 3 yards got me behind the wheel wells....I wasnt trying to cover the whole rear. With my quantity I could cover the wheel wells or do something else(door panels???????). Not being an interior guy the door area is somewhat tricky to cover.

Thanks for the input, protrash. I was wondering about carpet too, but that's somewhat down the road for me. I may only carpet the area back to the "step" in the floor anyway.

Thanks for the input. Your method sounds like a good idea. Use a molded carpet for the front, contoured area, and extra yardage for the flat area.
Does the front truck carpet have a bound edge at the rear? I guess I'm trying to picture the joint between the front and back carpet pieces. The PO of my Burb just took 1 single piece of carpet and tried to make it fit the whole floor. Needless to say it has a few custom joints to make it fit and I don't really like the color anyway.

I changed the original seating so the overlap takes place under the back of my seat and thru my console. The 2 pieces come togetherin the rear of the door jamb area. I used sill moulding to capture the carpet: no bound edges anywhere. It would look nicer this way if more was exposed.......I'll try to post some pics on my 'burb thread tomorrow. I wanted to do the interior pics because I also made some Frizzle Fry inspired kick panels that turned out pretty well and were fun to make also.

........here are pics of my interior. Its a little dirty but you can see how it turned out. The door jamb shot shows the overlap of the 2 carpet pieces. I am not making a show truck so it doesnt bother me. The rest of the seem is under the seats and console. I still need to finish my wheel wells.

Thanks for the pic's, I really like your method. It looks much better that my current carpet setup. I think I've found my new carpet plan. Oh, I dig those kick panels too.

I got to thinking about another idea. My Burb has carpet all the way to the back now but after seeing all those nice wood beds on this site I wonder... What if I replaced the plywood floor with a wood bed style floor? Maybe just a wood laminate floor over the plywood? Would that look stupid??

I'm starting to think about just re-doing the whole interior, now there's a plan.

I think that sounds good. Really, any idea can be made to work out if its well thought out and you can carry out a theme. In the end its up to you and what you like I suppose.

Im interested in seeing some pics of your 'burb; when you get a chance you should throw some on the Forum. There are a few 'burb people on this section.

I added a couple of pic's to my user gallery. They aren't much different that the pic's I posted to the Suburban thread back in the fall. I don't have any pic's of the interior or the engine, they're not anything special.

I really want to re-do the interior now, just can decide on color. PO changed it to dark green, it's OK but just OK. I've been thinking black, white, or maybe the original lt brown metallic.The hard part is figuring out how to break up the colors on the interior panels. I've seen the pics from the original brochures with the panel areas painted white and I like that look but I'm on the fence about the lt brown.

thats a good idea on the carpet kit, when i had my panel done they charge me a ton or maybe it was a ton and 1/2 jeff hows the bags coming?

.....these interiors are a ***** to tackle. All the metal is a rough proposition. I repainted the inside of my pick-up and was sore for days after all the sanding!
I would recommend staying w/ as much stuff as you can stand. My interior is not beautiful but its freshened up. my seats dont match either!!! At least they are new and comfortable.

what would be a good way to get the carpet to "mold" to the little step on the passenger side? this is the part that is different on a sub from a truck floor

I have used a heat gun before to re-shape pre-molded carpet that has the "plastic" on the back. It's kinda like hammer forming sheet metal but with carpet and a heat gun. Just go slow and be careful.

I had a local carpet/ interior shop, Gonzalez and Sons, do mine. For $500 they did the floor front to back, kick panels, wheel wells, bottom of doors, and the tailgate. It's coming apart now due to using my truck as a moving truck, but check out your local carpet/interior shops. As soon as I can get my pictures downloaded to the site, you'll be able o see my truck.
