Rear Axle Disassembly Issues

I'm having a problem disassembling the rear axle to remove the differential. The spacer seems to be hung up on the differential pinion.

Also, the entire differential won't spin; the axles will turn in opposite directions, but they will not spin backward or forward together. Maybe I broke something trying to get the drums off?

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Re: Rear Axle Disassembly Issues

Never mind, turns out the rear end doesn't like to be upside down.

Now I need to figure how to remove the retaining rings...

Re: Rear Axle Disassembly Issues

This must be some kinda magic thread; every time I post a question I figure out the answer.

Let's see if it works again...

What about removing the axle bearings?

Re: Rear Axle Disassembly Issues

If it's a 10 or 12 bolt and the bearings are pressed in the housing instead of on the axle, you need a slide hammer with inverted jaws. Either 2 or 3 jaws will work. Some of the parts places rent them cheap or even loan them if you buy the parts. Tell them what you're doing and a sharp counter person will get you the puller.

Re: Rear Axle Disassembly Issues

Thanks, Speed. I was able to use a fender washer with the slide hammer.

Now to test the thread with the ultimate question:

When will I have her on the road?
