play on pitman shaft of power steering
guys, some help please.
I recently started hearing a "BOINK" when turning the car in the street. Couldnt find what is was till last week. found that the pitman shaft moves up when steering to one side and then drops (BOINK) when I start turning to the other side. I made a picture and added some arrows to make things clear: the big arrow point to the pitman shaft the vertical arrow shows the direction of the play on the axle. I didnt measure it, but its like only 2-3mm and outside the car you can only see the play, but not hear it. when you are in the car, you can hear the BOINK very clearly. I already tried to looses the retainer nut on top and used a allen key to turn counterclockwise a quarter turn. tried that three times, but didnt seem to solve the play on the axle. any ideas?

Re: play on pitman shaft of power steering
he guys....
HELP! I made a video to check if the screw for the pre-load adjustment was still working. You know the one op top. as you can see on the video when I turn the bolt on top, the pitman shaft moves up and down. so that is still working. what else can cause this play on the shaft? anybody know? here is the video: you got to play it full screen to see the movement: http://youtu.be/exMBKlTqUy8

Re: play on pitman shaft of power steering
It may be time to replace the steering box.

Re: play on pitman shaft of power steering
I am thinking about rebuilding it. a kit seems cheap and I am not afraid of a little challenge. But first I want to know what might cause my play in the shaft.

driving a square is considered driving a museum piece over here. So no shop rebuilding stuf like this. Rebuilding engines yes...but rebuilding gearboxes no... I can do fine myself...probably gonna go ahead and order a rebuild kit

Re: play on pitman shaft of power steering
but before that I want to make sure that a rebuild kit will fix my problem.
I dont see how this vertical play will be fixed by a rebuild kit.

Re: play on pitman shaft of power steering
It's not that bad. I see them every day Did you already contacted Willem? If it's only a slightly common problem he would know some about it. And otherwise he may be having a spare...
