Caddy rear disc brakes

I have read that it is not that hard to put a late 70's cadillac deville disc brake rear end in a 71/72 chevy truck. My question is, is there any issues with putting it in a 68 chevy with 6 bolt coil spring rear end?

those caddies have 5 lug. also, need to measure the hub-to-hub on the rear to see what the difference in overall length is going to be. if it is off too much, you will see clearance issues with your wheels and may need to get a different offset on your wheels to compensate for the change in rear length. also consider brake line pieces you will need to buy as well as a different master cylinder for 4 wheel disks. mounting will also be an issue, will need some welding done, will need to empty the rear and remove the axles.

good luck!!

Thanks, I was pretty sure that it would be quite a bit of work.

I dont think people use the entire rear end. I believe they are just using the disk setup and maybe getting the axle machined. There should be something under search.

paintpro does have a point. you don't have to use the whole rear end. that would eliminate having to change brackets, however, you would still have to do work on the axle tube ends since they will not be the same and, of course, you would have to remove the axles from your rear end you have, which means almost the same amount of work as using the whole thing. but if you're going to change gears anyway, this would be no problem.....

however, i think that disk brake kits are already available for your rear end type. maybe cpp has them or possibly ece.

It is from the '82-'88 I think. And yes, they are waaaayyyyyyy too long! Work was done before I bought the truck. I just found out yesterday what rear end it was.

Thanks for all the info guys! Definately gives me things to ponder.

REDNEKID, what is the bolt patern on the camaro rims? I am guessing 4.25? (or 4.75, or whatever it is...)

(sorry, I am still new to Chevy's)

My '68 has '79-85 eldorado brakes in the rear. However, I bought the whole rear end assembly with brakes from Dynatrac. It's a Dana 60 rear. Works great.

Before you guys get too deep. Go price the calipers for the firebird and the caddy. I put 82 firebirds on my Chevy II calipers where about 200. rotors about 70. axle flanges turn down 50. and I already had the brackets. I still havn't got to the e-brake cables yet! Its cheaper to get a kit that bolts on.

pickup6772 - I saw your post after I started this one. Thanks

Toytruck - Thanks for the heads up on that. I don't need disks in the rear at all, just thought it would be cool to have. However I think that for the expense/work, it won't be happening for me anytime soon.

As always, thanks for all the excellent info
