custom center console - how to raise the 4WD selector
he guys,
I want to build a custom center console for our Suburban. But that would "hide" the 2-4WD-HI-LO selector if I dont raise it. I looked under the car, but dont immediately had a brught idea how to change the linkage to make sure it still works afterwards. Anybody done this yet?

Extend the shaft itself

Re: custom center console - how to raise the 4WD selector
thanks, but that will take up a lot of room in the console, since the extended arm will make the shifter travel more.
I might just hide it and make a door so I can access it whenever I need it. Dont use it that much

You could always make another shaft with a pivot in the console and attach it with a wrist pin to the original shaft. It'll reverse the shift pattern but will have the same throw.

I was more looking for either proven custom solutions or some after market stuff. was hoping to find other 4WD drivers that made a center console

You could adapt the GMT-400 style shifter that bolts to the driver's side of the hump to your truck. A friend of mine put a square body transfer case in his GMT-400 for his SAS and built a z-bar type pivot that bolted across the trans/tcase adapter which allowed him to shift the tcase from the other side of the tunnel.

Re: custom center console - how to raise the 4WD selector
keep it stock height or shorter?
make a "extra" shifter handle that slides down over old one? open cover ,slide shifter on,shift ,remove, close cover or have the shifter nut size welded on top a six inch+ tube, slide another tube over that cut to lenght...

Or a ford style shifter which is on the side of the trans hump.Either way you will be stuck making your own shifter linkage.

Re: custom center console - how to raise the 4WD selector
You could make it a short throw shifter, its the same concept as a Honda Civic shifter. Add length between the pivot and the spot where the t-case linkage bolts on, making the throw shorter. So now when you make the top of the handle longer, the throw is the same as stock.

Here is an NV-4500 and NP-241 that is going into a 1988 GMC K1500, the passenger side drop NP-241 is from a square body. Notice the linkage for the transfer case. It is built for this style shifter.
