Starter Solenoid wiring for coil
Its been quite a few years since I remember doing this but I know the stock type starters on these trucks have two small terminals on the starter solenoid, with one for cranking and the other for powering the coli if I remember? I think it had to do with allowing the coil to see 12 volts during cranking? Anyways I am now replacing a 1970 307 with gm crate motor. The crate motor has a larger diameter flex plate which meant the stock starter wont fit anymore. I cant swap flex plates because the bolt pattern diameter is different between the old motor and the new later model one. So I bought one of the high torque starters for it but it only has the one typical terminal for cranking> What should I do with the extra wire so everything will still work?

Re: Starter Solenoid wiring for coil
When you say "GM crate motor", is it actually made by GM. If so, I thought they all come with an HEI distributor. If so, there is no coil, and you'll need to do a bit of rewiring. There's lots of info on the forum that'll help if that's the case. I was doing this today with the GM Performance Parts engine I'm installing... and hoping I did it right!

Re: Starter Solenoid wiring for coil
Your crate motor has a points ignition? With an HEI type ignition system you use a full 12v all the time. The points coils used the starter circuit as a spark helper during cranking but dropped back to the resistor ~ 9v wire in the ignition run position.

Re: Starter Solenoid wiring for coil
Well it was a incomplete crate motor. It now has a MSD system with a MSD distributer a 6AL Ignition controller MSD standard type coil(looks like a stock style coil). The distributor is not a HEI clone. What I am really looking for is a wiring source for the 12V for the Pos coil side. It would normally just be acc 12volts but that brings me to that solenoid wire. I thought I remembered there was a problem getting 12 volts when cranking on these trucks. Maybe there isn't. I was trying to figure out where to get 12v during cranking and when key is on.

OK so that extra wire is just for points style distributors?

Re: Starter Solenoid wiring for coil
Yes. The yellow wire from the solenoid to the coil can be removed tor the HEI. It provided a full 12 volts to the coil for the points distributors, when the key was in the "start" position .
