1972 GMC Jimmy 4x4 13,100 orig miles

This is a great site, love looking at all of the 67-72 chev gmc. I sold my last blazer 6 yes ago, and have had several trucks, blazers and suburbans over the dozen or so years.

I just purchased a 1972 GMC 4x4 Jimmy with 13,100 original mile, also got a original copy of the last vehicle insurance registration from 1975/76. And was also given the original dealership bill of sale from December 20, 1971, cost was $5,600 plus tax.

The Jimmy has been sitting under a carport for 38 years, gas tank was removed several years ago because the gas rotted the tank. The original owner passed away 4 years ago and had started it a few times a year prior to his death. I met him a dozen years ago and was going to help him with a minor restoration, paint and clean up when he was ready to go. It had been 5 years since I had gone and visited him, time really goes by with work and family.

Ray, I'm no computer whiz, but it's pretty easy. Click on the paper clip in the toolbar above your message and a window pops up. Click on the "choose file" and go to where you have them stored in your drive. Choose a pix, and then click "open", then click the upload button and wait until it uploads. Close the window and then preview your message to see if it shows up. Works for me...

been working on getting this one for over a dozen years. I have had several 71-72 2wd and 4wd, blazers, pickups, and suburbans over the years, but never one as clean and original as this one. Only thing the original owner did 20 or so years ago was change the drive train to 3/4 ton. It has disc brakes and sway bar up front at least. Not sure if he just changed rear axles and front Rotors to 8 bolt. I will know more in the next few days.

Before I read what you wrote last, I was wondering why it had 8 lug wheels. Those are defintely 8 luggers up front and back. Those are split-rims, aka widow makers by some.
The transmission and transfer case appear to be from the 3/4 ton donor as well. That's pretty cool to find a low-mileage with an early 70's 3/4 ton swap. Makes it that much more unique.

Some CLR might clean that grille and hood up a bunch too. Do some reseach on CLR cleaning on surface rust.

Dood, that is so cool. What a work horse, but why 3/4 ton conversion? Seriously was he plowing snow or pulling a big trailer?? My 72 Blazer has 6 lug hubs, my 72 3/4 ton GMC Suburban has 8 lug and 16.5" tires on split rims. Harder to find tires for the 16.5's and the split rims are notorious for causing injury. I knew a guy who was killed changing a tire on a split rim in Vermont. Be careful with those! Guy.

There is a bit more of a story on this Jimmy. I talked to the original owner several times over the past 12 yrs or so, and he told me he bought the Jimmy, December 20th 1971, drove it for pleasure up to 1975, then he bought a 1969 3/4 ton 4x4 long box pickup. He drove the pickup back and forth to work for 30 years, then another 4 years until he passed away in 2009. He told me he switched out the front and rear diff from the 69 pickup to the 72 Jimmy over 20 years ago. The only thing that I can't figure out is why the front diff on the Jimmy still has disc brakes and sway bar. The 69 comes with front and rear drum brakes. Not sure the gears that are in the Jimmy know either, will pull the covers off and check. The Jimmy glove box decal had posi traction rear axle as a option also. I seem to recal him telling me it was originally ordered by BC Hydro as a fleet vehicle. When he bought the Jimmy it didn't come with a passenger seat or seat belts. The dealership got a blue seat out of a bus and installed it, different than the drivers seat.The dealership had to order blue seat belts for e passenger seat, when he got them they did not quite match original ones. On the original bill of sale from the dealership it states the passenger seat belt was ordered and should arrive soon. Can't wait to spend the day cleaning and taking a look at everything.

The shifters/knobs looks more mid -70's. But the floor mats look original and the waffle brake/clutch indicates it was a base model. Check and see if the T-case is a NP203?

Definitely not the original shifter ball was my first observation, but that full-floater in the back is certainly a clue it's not original!

FWIW, my '72 Jimmy had 113,000 miles on it when my Dad bought it in '77, almost the same time period that this truck was a driver. I find it hard to believe that someone only drive it 13k miles and then did a complete 8 lug axle swap on it?

Cool truck and I'd own it in a heartbeat, but some of the facts seem funny.

Yes the shifter knobs didn't seem right, the stock ones for 72 were shiny and rounder, kinda smooth, with white letters or numbers. Also wondered why the shifter knobs were painted blue, when they are typically painted black or chrome.
It took me awhile to believe that the original miles were 13,100 even though I was told by the original owner prior to his passing away. I was convinced once I was given the original insurance document from 75/76, also he did buy the 69 3/4 ton 4x4 in 1974, and this was his daily driver to work every day for 30 years. One other thing was he taught computer classes at a university which was roughly 2-3 miles from his house. I asked his wife about the low miles and she said the furthest they drove was from Vancouver to Sqaumish, and camping a few times. 90 percent of the miles were put on from 72-75 prior to buying the 69. She also said he used to transfer the 69 license plate to the Jimmy a few times a year to go camping. If this Jimmy had 113100 miles it would be rusted in the typical spots. The weather, as well as living close to the ocean would have caused a lot of rust. I lifted the rubber mats and the original paint shines through out the interior, just a lot of surface rust on the exterior paint, due to being exposed to the elements for 40 years. Will post some more pictures in a few days when I get it home.

Crazy story for sure. I drove my '69 Camaro nearly twice that far when I got it in '84-'85!

My Jimmy has the deluxe pedal pads, and even with 350+k miles on it they still look pretty new. Pedal pads is one of those things I always look at to see if a vehicle has many miles on it. But they can fool you!

Once I get the Jimmy home and start going through it I will be able to confirm the wear and tear to determine if the original owner and his wife lied to me, not sure why they would. This guy did not even want to sell it, it was his jewel, been with him longer than his wife and 3 children. I have had over 30 of the 67-72 blazers, Jimmys, suburbans, and pickups over the years, only one or two were as clean and rust free like this one. I bought a 71 3/4 ton pu with 71 camper it had 21,000 orig miles, very clean and rust free. Also had a 71 3/4 ton Cheyenne with 17,000 orig miles, bought off a 84 yr old man, super clean. I also bought a 1971 3/4 ton 4x4 Super Cheyenne long box pu with 70,000 original miles, but was so rusted I had to replace every piece of sheet metal, cab and cowl was all that I kept from original truck. Like I said before Vancouver, British Columbia climate and salting eats metal.

cool ride! check out the seat adjuster rod on the passenger seat next to the tunnel cover! didnt those only flip forward?
