pump gas SBC need opinions bad
I got a buddy with a torn up SBC . He wants a pump gas motor that is still drivable , makes enough vacuum for power brakes and makes 500+ horse power . Stay with me on this cause it is happenning .
Here are the stipulations : Must be carb to pan , jetted and tuned wants a warranty of some sort really wants decent parts ( made in USA ) Must be hydraulic cam or low maintience to a certain extent ( for a high HP motor) budget is $10.000 right now he is looking at the Blueprint series from summit . I am thinking Ohio crank or one of Scott Schaffroff's Hydraulic roller deal . LS is out of the question due to chassis configuration . Conventional SBC Think some have insight on a better combo or package .

Re: pump gas SBC need opinions bad
I notice you say LS is out due to chassis. What's it going in to? Is it out due to a class spec or are they not willing to look in to motor mount adapters and headers. Most cases those two things are really the only issues for most platforms.
We both know a low maintence reliable 500hp is not super difficult from an LS and 10k budget. Just sayin. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: pump gas SBC need opinions bad
You could do a pump gas LS with a turbo for less but then look at the computer work, trans, lots of little extras will add up fast in doing an LS swap.
If sticking with an old engine, You can not beat this deal. The owner is one hell of a guy as well. The 406 is at the bottom of the page. http://www.vortecproperformance.com/...binations.html

Re: pump gas SBC need opinions bad
My old luv truck went 6.30's with a 331 sbc. Ported iron heads, solid .555 cam, had a lil bit of compression but it would run the number on nitrous. The truck ran 7.40's on motor. I actually drove it to rankin quite often from tomball so it was streetable. So with that being said I think a 406 with some afr 195's, a good hyd roller, and a good drive train should easily run the numbers your looking for and save some money. IMO

If hydro boost is belt drivin then no-go . There is only room for 2 groove pulleys with out rebuilding the entire core support .

Re: pump gas SBC need opinions bad
Vacuum canister? If not, I am sure a call to Mark Jones, Vortecpro, could put a different cam in there and make more vacuum. still probably be above 540hp.

Re: pump gas SBC need opinions bad
Hydroboost operates off of your power steering pump.

Re: pump gas SBC need opinions bad
Doing a pump gas 383 with an AFR 210 .
If power steering type pump would be used it would have to be a high mount and remote resivor sprint car type deal . There is no room down low .

Re: pump gas SBC need opinions bad
I tried for 500+ with a flat top 6" rod 383 with the old AFR 210's (box stock not the cnc program) flat milled to 68cc. Zero decked it wsa just over 10.2 compression. Cam was a Crane hydraulic roller at 236/248 @ 0.050 and .585/.61 lift. With a single 4150 we couldn't get it over 480HP on the dyno. Around 6200-6300 we started having valve float with the big ol SpeedPro hydraulic rollers and the light hydraulic rollers springs AFR supplies. Later I tried a set of heavier springs but it still felt like it was nosing over around 6500. Not enough cam, not enough spring, running out of head..... I don't know? It was enough for the time and effort anyways.
Point of all that is I'm sure a better combination could make the 500. But like everyone, I think the vacuum is going to be the issue. If I were going to try it again,, I'd probebly just jump straight into a SHP with a 4.125 bore and 4" stroke. I really am starting to like the Brodix STS 233 heads on a big inch SBC. There a pretty decent 'right out of the box' head. But that would probably kill his $10k budget for sure.

Re: pump gas SBC need opinions bad
Mine is nosed over at 6200 rpm right now . I hate to even say this out load , but i have over 550 passes on the valve springs . I am buying the 64 cc chamber 210 eliminators and a dish so if he hurts this new 383 he can stick them on a flat top 350
