1972 Blazer - Smog Pump?
Were any 1972 Blazers fitted with smog equipment? I read somewhere that they were not, but mine has an A/C bracket that has a space to attach a smog pump. Also it has a 3 groove water pump pulley with an empty groove for a smog pump belt presumably. For what it is worth, it is a California car with the YF5 California Assembly Line Emissions Test. If they did equip 72 Blazers with smog pumps, would the emissions test indicate that this vehicle originally had the pump? Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: 1972 Blazer - Smog Pump?
While I've never heard of a smog pump on anything before 1973, anything is possible I suppose. Are you sure the engine isn't out of a later vehicle? My understanding is that 1972 emissions consisted of an EGR and a vented tank at the most. It would really be sad if there was a state somewhere that required a vehicle to pass some California only emission regulation built prior to catalytic converters when the state of California itself, the home of compulsory and mandatory emission inspections, no longer smogs pre cat era vehicles.
...and let's face it the early pre-electronic fuel injection smog stuff was terrible if not outright scammy. It robbed fuel mileage, reduced engine lifespan, crippled performance and made American cars a joke and imported cars a castrated version of what they were in the rest of the world. |

Yes, they had pumps. We are exempt from smog here now.
You will just have to take it in and see if they say you need it. Play dumb though, dont point it out. Btw... they were a joke. Didnt do a thing for emmisions. |

Also, part of the emissions system was the charcoal cannister, prabably the least passive of all the junk they added in an attempt to clean up the interal combustion engine. Which just pulled vapors outta the gas tank, and used vacuum. Air pumps dumped air into the exhaust, cant see how that would help

Re: 1972 Blazer - Smog Pump?
Yes California 1/2 ton and Blazers had smog pumps and canisters. The theory on the pump was cold air pumped into a hot exhaust would cause unburnt fuel to combust in the exhaust system. Alot like an exhaust leak will cause a back fire on deceleration.

I'm pretty sure they had that even in 1967.

My 1970 Jimmy has no traces of such a thing and is a Black Plate truck, so it is a Cali original and has Emission Control listed on the SPID.

Probably because it's older (pre pump).

Re: 1972 Blazer - Smog Pump?
1966 was the first year for smog pumps on cars and 1/2 ton trucks.

Re: 1972 Blazer - Smog Pump?
My Dads 1969 Blazer had one from the factory. Michigan vehicle from day one. It was a 307 With manual trans (3 speed on column). I think the manual trans vehicles got the smog set up.
