To rewire or not to rewire...

I am at the point of deciding to use my original wiring or buying a kit to rewire the whole truck. Im not changing but one thing. Probably going to go with a one wire alternator. I may change to a 700r4 in the future. I have a small block and am running an original gauge cluster. I see that Classic Parts offers made up harnesses. I am confident i could tackle a universal kit, but don't know if i need to go that route. Anyone that used a universal kit, pros, cons? Who's kit did you use?

Re: To rewire or not to rewire...

Go to section 2 of the FAQ, there are a couple of threads that will help a lot. I am going to do a full rewiring. My PO botched up a number of harnesses plus I don,t want to rely on wire that is over 45 years old. Insulation does get brittle being exposed to the elements over time. Lot's of people on this forum have had bad experiences with Painless harnesses for our trucks.

Re: To rewire or not to rewire...

I used a universal Speedway Motors 12 circuit kit. I am just wrapping everything up now. My 64 is my first build and I really am not great with electrical. The kit was very easy to install and I am very happy with it. We don't know what make the $500-700 kits worth it. I am running a 350/350 and aftermarket gauges, but the harness could get set up for original gauges pretty easily too. I am also running a 1 wire alternator and the kit comes prepared for that. Probably one of the best things I did in my build!

Re: To rewire or not to rewire...

If its mostly stock, a stock harness sure is easy to just plug in and go... If you figure what your time is worth, I doubt a universal harness is any cheaper.

Re: To rewire or not to rewire...

I have use pretty much all of the brands. Painless is great if you donr mind extra work/time.

They supply miles of extra wire which is great to run neatly and in places where orignal was not.

BUT ...

If you want a plug n play, OG replacement harness...

We wired mine from the ground up, but we changed literally everything. Lots of work, but nice if your old wiring is a hazard (mine lit itself on fire so it was time to go)

Re: To rewire or not to rewire...

im going through the same stage right now i have bought the 500560 kit from summit racing for $466 its AAW, that being said i think this is the best choice i have done research and this seems to be the one that best works as you can chose to go stock or upgrade your truck in the future and this kit will still work.

This is my 2 cents, but I used M&H and they have all the upgrades you could want, and its a plug and play wiring system. As for your 700 r I went mechanical on it instead of electric. Here is a link to their site http://www.wiringharness.com/PDFS/TR...hevy_Truck.pdf
