Transmission suggestions.

So I'm looking at putting in a 5.3l in my 1950s chevy pickup. With possibly adding about 7-8 lbs of boost on it. I'm wondering what transmission you guys would suggest with that motor. I believe the gearing ratio is going to be something like a 3:73. I have some flexibility on what i am going since I am just starting on the project which is a cab only.

Looking at Chassis from TCI and Art Morrison. This will be a daily driver with adjustable coil overs front and back. Not sure if i should be looking at a T56 or a 4L60. Let me know what you guys think and suggest. I'm just trying to get some ideas at this point

Re: Transmission suggestions.

I love my 4L60E that I have in my 53 with a Compu-shift.

I liked it so much that I bought a LS and a 4L60E to place in my "new" truck the 78 !!

Your stock chassis should take care of your set up IF it is in good shape, look at GOOD IFS and a 9" for the rear and you will be good for another 50 years

Re: Transmission suggestions.

+1 on the 4l60 set up. My 2005 crew cab 2x has a 5.3, 4l60e and 4:10's great puller and 20 mpg on 22's.

My 50 burb has inline 250, 700r4 and 3:73's gets 20 mpgs with 29" tires at 60 mph but when hooked to my 20 ft 4k lb trailer it could use the 4:10's.

My wife's 2008 Tahoe has a 5.3, 4l60e and 3:73's and gets 18mpg on 20's. It's a 4x4 but lowered 2 inches, pulls the same trailer great.

Just giving you some examples

Re: Transmission suggestions.

t56 are strong and fun, but you will pay to get one. 4l60's are everywhere and can be picked up for pretty cheap. that said, if you plan on taking it to the track at all and doing a lot of pulls down the strip, i'd suggest building the tranny up.

a pretty much stock 4l60 would handle daily driving

I money isn't a limiting factor, I'd go with a T56 Magnum 6-speed with the wide ratio. Or, if you want an automatic, go with a 4L60 with a Gear Vendors o/d. Both choices would be perfect with a 5.3L and a 3.73 rear.

Re: Transmission suggestions.

I'm using a 5.3L and am using a built 4L65E from Finish Line Transmissions. I wanted something a little heavier duty, and the 4L80E would have needed some minor transmission tunnel modifications to the cab, which I didn't want. So this was a good compromise.
