Rear axle questions
I hope someone on here, smarter than me, can clear this up for me. Are the axle shafts for a '70 (6 bolt) and a '71 (5 bolt) the same length? Are both sides the same length? Can the backing plate and brakes from a '70 be used with the '71 drums? Any input will be appreciated.

Re: Rear axle questions
The 71's axles are longer but the backing plates are the same I think. JEGS catalog has the lengths listed for the axles.
And the length is the same side to side.

Re: Rear axle questions
So the '71 axles won't work in a '70 housing?

Re: Rear axle questions
From what Ive read, yes and no. Apparently they used the narrow and wide rear in 1970. So you will have to measure how wide your rear axle is. If its the wide axle like they used in 71-72, you should be able to use those 5 lug axles. If its narrow like my 1969 is, spend the money on the Moser's.

Re: Rear axle questions
71-2 axles are slightly longer, but will interchange with no problem. I've done it on a '66 but I also used the backing plates and all the brake components to guarantee no problems.

Re: Rear axle questions
If both housings measure aprox 57" from back of backing plate to same then they will work. Done it many times.
