Question AD Chevy and GMC differences

I am looking to start a Advance Design truck and have always loved the 47-53 Chevy front end. I have come upon a nice 48 GMC and was wondering what all was needed to use the Chevy grille. I know the hood and grille need changed, just trying to figure out what else I would need.

Thanks,
Josh

Re: AD Chevy and GMC differences

The front crossmember in the frame unless you can figure out how to use the GMC radiator support with the Chevy nose.

The GMC has a small round parklight on the fender below the headlight that you would either have to remove and fill in the holes or you could turn it into a turn signal separate from the park lights in the grill or just leave the Chevy park lights out of the grill altogether.
This is a GMC Front Crossmember that is in the frame I am going to use under my 48 Chev.
Note the shape of the front crossmember.

This is a photo of the Chevy Crossmember that I am swapping into the frame. Even sitting on the roof in the snow you can see the difference.

48 Chev 3100 that will run a 292 Six.
71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant.
77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

All that is left not mentiond is the tail gate. Same tranny, same rear end, same fenders. There is also the engine it's a high pressure strait 6 and chevy only used low pressure engines in those years.

Does the gmc have the big clunky grille and rounded over bumper like the 47?
I need some parts if it is.

Gmc used a completely different grill. Google late 47 gmc. This will give you to differences. Also try to contact Jim carter classic truck parts on there web page. They sell more than lmc

Re: AD Chevy and GMC differences

After thinking on it a bit I think you might be able to get away with swapping the Chevy hood, hood latch panel, grill and splash apron below the grill to the GMC along with the filler panel for the Chevy that goes behind the front bumper. That would leave you the GMC pieces to sell and recover some or all of your investment in the Chevy pieces.

I would be extending my homework beyond asking here though and sort though the catalogs and see what other parts that are involved are different. Do the inner fenders have the same part numbers or different part numbers?

I think the biggest headache you might have if you just swap hood, grill, latch panel and splash apron is getting the latch panel to fit the radiator and radiator support as I believe there is somewhat of a difference in that area that would have to be addressed.

Re: AD Chevy and GMC differences

Too late to post on the previous post due to the half hour edit thing.
These are the best photos I could find of AD trucks with the hoods open showing the latch panels in front of the radiators.

GM AD trucks just flat do not look good with their hoods gapping open at car shows. Or at least take terrible photos when showing their mouths wide open.

Anyhow you can see the differences in the latch panels in front of the radiator in the photos. it might be that a guy would have to take the top half of the Chevy core support and weld it to the bottom half of the GMC core support to get things to look and fit right and use the Chevy radiator.
