New Guy: It all started with a barn find...

Got a call from a farmer friend of mine about an old truck he wanted to sell for scrap. A few weeks went by and I dropped by to take a look at the truck. What he had was a 1966 GMC 4000 which had been parked in a barn for the last 30 years. I looked it over and found one small rusted area on front of the hood. No dents and no damage. I bought the truck for scrap price and went straight home to start research. My plan is to restore this truck into a flatbed to pull my gooseneck with my 1972 John Deere 4320. I am looking into plans to convert this old truck into something a little more road friendly. Any advice is appreciated.

Great looking rig, and welcome to the forum. We will want more pics. You did well on the price and the truck looks real solid. There are quite a few big truck guys here and they will chime in and help out. Keep us posted on the progress.

Don't give up on that original paint without at least trying to bring it back to life first!!

Ooo yeah! Engine pics please. If you're going to just throw that 305 out make sure you offer it up on the boards. Those things do NOT die. Ever. They'll be running long after that duramax is barfing dirt.

I am torn with what to do. Bring it back to stock or make it my own. Either way I plan on making it a sweet ride. The short bed idea is one I'm strongly considering

Re: New Guy: It all started with a barn find...

Welcome to the forum

Very nice score

You seldom find the medium duty trucks in that nice of shape.

A few months ago, I acquired a '64 GMC 4000 that had the 351 V6 with a 5 and a 2 in it. It had heavier springs and a heavier GVW rear differential than my '63 Chevy C60. It also had the big 6 lug wheel bolt pattern versus the small 10 lug pattern on my C60. I see yours has the small 10 lug pattern.

You can update your GMC by using parts from newer trucks, much the same as you can with the light duty trucks. Often you can find a good donor truck in a retired beer/soda side bay delivery truck. They typically go cheap due to the frame mods that have been done, and most people don't want to deal with that. That's what I did about 3 years ago. I bought a retired '89 GMC beer truck with the intention of using it to upgrade my '63 C60. But that '89 is just too nice to tear apart. The good thing is that I scrapped out the aluminum beverage body and paid for the truck +$300.

Some radial tires will help the driveability. If you have trouble finding 20" radials, you might look for some of the 19.5" wheels used on some motorhomes.

I thought that was an old Missouri plate, then I looked at your profile. Nice find and welcome. I'm just about an hour south of you.

Re: New Guy: It all started with a barn find...

You can out a 401 or a 478 v6 in there and it will look stock and you will get a boat load of torque. I think stock would be really cool, or how a bout a 702 v12 the gm made.........
