70 Blazer Tire Rack
I bought this 1970 Blazer a few weeks ago. It has this tire rack which I removed because I don't particularly like outside racks and I thought it was aftermarket. The top body mount bolts to nuts that are permanently attached inside the panel. The bottom body mount has a backing plate with nuts that can be reached. Now I'm wondering if this is a factory item. I don't see any access to the upper mount nuts. Looks like they were attached before the panel went on. I was going to weld up the holes but not so sure now. Anybody know if this might be a factory piece?

Re: 70 Blazer Tire Rack
I had one on my '72 Jimmy and it appeared to be factory.
The upper bracket can be removed by removing the marker light. Once the marker light has been removed you should be able to see/feel a rod hanging down. Once the upper bolts from the tire rack have been removed the bracket inside where the marker light was should be loose and then be removed. If possible don't scrap them, there are people on the forum that are looking for a factory tire rack. Good luck, Bob Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: 70 Blazer Tire Rack
I hadn't thought about pulling the tail light. Away from home until Tuesday so I'll take a look then and see if I can get to the upper backing plate. The lower one just dropped off. Thanks for the input. Dave

Re: 70 Blazer Tire Rack
I bought one couple years ago but without the inside pieces its no good. You go through the side marker to hold the inside piece.

Re: 70 Blazer Tire Rack
Not factory but a common aftermarket piece. My K5 has one installed by a PO - I don't much care for the look though. If I ever do a repaint I would get rid of mine. Nice looking K5 - more pics!

Re: 70 Blazer Tire Rack
Not factory for sure. But you won't get to the rod attached to the inside bracket from the tail light.. You have to remove the side marker light. You'll probable need vice grips, they fit pretty tight.. But they are useless without that inner bracket. I put the same kind on mine 40 some years ago, and had to tap the inner bracket in with a hammer. [has a rod welden onto it to install]
