Re: gas tank uestion

I do not have pictures, but on our old GMC I did install the original tank in the front of the bed. it works best of you turn it around and put the filler on the passenger side- that puts the flat side of the tank against the front of the bed.

Thinking of moving my behind the seat tank to the bed as well. TINCAN, can you elaborate on how you secured the tank to the bed, any cage or protection surrounding it, etc?

Re: gas tank uestion

I reused the original straps to secure the tank to the front panel. I placed a 2 X 4 about 3' long under the tank so it was not sitting on the pinch welded seam. Since we made a bed cover, I did make a bulkhead or new front panel that covered the tank, and added a filler hole above the cap.
The only pics I have that show any of it are from when the truck was wrecked, and it only really shows the bed cover.

Re: gas tank uestion

Thanks tincan for the info. Moving tank from cab to bed sounds easier and cheaper than converting to a frame rail tank.
Hey Slepy, what is your motivation for asking about moving the tank to the bed, adjust seat back for more room?

Re: gas tank uestion

We moved ours a safety thought. Glad we did- as you can see the cab was hit right where the tank was-would have damaged/possibly split it open. she was injured and stuck in the truck after the accident. The relocated tank never moved.

I am not saying the original location is not safe- millions of trucks had them, by all manufacturers for many years.

We move our tanks as a preference, and to gain leg room.

Yes a bit mire room as well as some back seat storage. Plus I get tired of the fumes, and Since I have a 60 an under bed tank cost to much

Re: gas tank uestion

Just wanted to see if anyone else has pictures of the factory gas tank relocated to the front wall of the bed. Considering this as an interim solution so that I won't have to purchase two different tank setups (eventually going from carb'd to EFI).

Re: gas tank uestion

A lot of diesel guys use aftermarket bed tanks. Maybe you can get lucky and find one? My dad had one that was nearly 40 gallons. In his travels he would find fuel 70¢ a gallon cheaper and buy 80 gallons.

Re: gas tank uestion

I'll eventually run an under-bed tank. I'm just looking to mount the factory tank in the bed in the interim. If I was going to purchase another tank, I'd just go ahead and buy the carb-style under-bed tank and replace it with the EFI-style tank later.

I'm just looking for any pictures of the mounting methods that others have used to relocate the factory tank from behind the seat to inside the bed.

Just a thought........ Can't you get a EFi tank and use it for carb? Could you plug the return line untill you install the EFI? I thouht I saw an article in Custom Classic Truck , were they did that .
With that said I woul like to see a picture of a stock tank relocted to the bed.

Re: gas tank uestion

Here ya go This is how truck #1 was when I got it. I think part of the reason the PO put it there is because it leaked. Also, notice the High Tech front seat mount made of 2x6...lol All though the pics don't really show much, it does add a bit of room to the inside of the truck to remove the tank and put it in the rear.
